Pros: The classic, original cocoa butter scent. Gentle cleansing with plenty of lather. Inexpensive.
Cons: Limited availability online. Bar soaps can be messy.
Nostalgic confessions of an occasional yet loyal bar soap user:
In today's world of health and beauty, my guess would be that most people use body washes verses good old fashioned bar soaps. I could be wrong, but with so many brands and scents to choose from, who wants to settle for a boring and usually messy bar of soap instead? It took me awhile to make the switch from bar soaps to liquid body washes, but I've still not converted 100% of the time. For bar soaps remain a cheap yet both simple and effective way to stay clean. One product I've used on and off for over 20 years now is this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals as the nostalgic scent reminds me my younger years as a newlywed. How weird that certain scents can take you back, but this one does it for me every time. Read on to find out more about an inexpensive bar soap that has stood the test of time in my house.
~~~The Bar Soap~~~
I always keep a simple bar of soap in the shower along with my current choice of body wash for times when all I want to do is clean up in a hurry without the extra fuss. It doesn't happen very often, but for when only a 5 minute shower is all I can manage, this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals is the one I reach for more often than not. Each 4.25 ounce bar is pale yellow in color with rounded edges and a slightly concave body to it. Most importantly, it features a classic cocoa butter scent that reminds me of a time in my life before our kids were even thought of. There's plenty of lather produced with this bar soap, which is certainly a plus in my book. It provides gentle yet effective cleansing, especially when I'm all sweaty from a good workout and all I want is a simple head to toe cleansing. While it's not particularly moisturizing for those with super dry skin, it does rinse away easily leaving behind a "squeaky clean" feeling with no filmy residue left on the skin. I've never had a problem with sensitivity issues although the mild lather seems very hypoallergenic to me. So while there are newer scents to choose from, I usually choose this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals as I never seem to tire of the classic fragrance.
~~~Price & Availability~~~
This Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals can be purchased in the 2 and/or 4 bar bundles at most grocery and discount stores. I usually buy just 2 bars at a time as they will last several months of occasional use in the shower. My local grocery store carries the 2 bar pack for around $2 each but often puts them on sale for 2 packs for $3. That's when I use coupons found in my Sunday newspaper and stock up when I can. So while I've noticed amazon.com of all places currently sells the 2 bar pack for $3.42 (but then they charge more for shipping than they do for the soap itself! Crazy.), I always pick it up at a much cheaper price. Two of my favorite online stores for purchasing health and beauty supplies are cvs.com and drugstore.com, yet neither place currently sells this soap in the Original Scent. However, for those that prefer the newer scents of either the Island Mist or the Mango Splash, finding them online is much easier. But for me, only the Original Scent with the brown plastic wrapper is the only one that will do. I will continue to purchase this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals at my local grocery store, but here's the link for anyone wishing to purchase it online:
As stated above, I purchase this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals mostly because of the nostalgic scent. To me, most bar soaps aren't much different as far as their cleansing powers go, so it's the scent that makes the biggest difference in what I'll buy. Indications for use according to product advertising are as follows: Tone Original Scent Skin Care Bar is available for those who love Tone soap's original fragrance and skin care bar with naturally moisturizing Cocoa Butter. Tone soap's Original Scent Cream Bar is now enhanced with the addition of a tropical blend of Botanical Extracts, like Aloe and Papaya. As a newlywed so many years ago now, one of the first bar soaps I remember buying at the time (the pre-body wash era!) is this one. The simple scent it left behind in our tiny bathroom and one bedroom apartment seems priceless somehow now. Nostalgia can make us do crazy things, and somehow I try to keep holding on to an earlier time just by using the same soap even though there are still tons of other brands to choose from now. However, as I age, I have noticed that I often do need to apply a body lotion after showering with this soap as it's not as moisturizing as many of the luxurious body washes I also use from time to time. So while this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals provides a simple clean with a nostalgic fragrance at a very affordable price, it does now have its limitations in a world full of so many other highly moisturizing options beyond just plain bar soap anymore.
If you are ever in a "back to basics" mood, then chances are this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals will fit the bill nicely with its nostalgic cocoa butter scent. It provides plenty of lather for serious cleansing of the skin without being harsh or overly drying even though you will feel "squeaky clean" after rinsing. And if you pick some up on sale with coupons, bar soaps like this one are literally dirt cheap. Yes, they can be quite messy if allowed to get wet in the shower, but waste is usually minimal, especially when it becomes only a tiny sliver after multiple uses. And for those concerned about the environment, there's much less packaging to throw away when compared to a large plastic bottle full of body wash. (Just throwing in something to think about there!) Of course there are times when I like to pamper myself with luxurious body washes, but at other times all I want it to be clean and this bar soap never disappoints me. In conclusion, I highly recommend this Tone Soap Original Scent with Cocoa Butter and Botanicals as 20 plus years of use can't be wrong and nothing but five stars will do! Good luck and happy bathing :-)
