Pros:faster than from scratch, not too spicy
Cons:small amounts
The Bottom Line: Tony Chacere's Jambalaya Mix is a great substitute to homemade.

Our oldest son has always and will probably continue to eat anything that is put in front of him. He is the one that is always trying new things at restaurants and experimenting with foods at home. He is always using spices and seasonings in ways we would not even think of trying. I, after having sampled some of his masterpieces, will probably not be trying them anymore.

One of his absolute favorite foods is Jambalaya but time does not always permit for us to make this dish from scratch. We purchase Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix for a quicker yet still delicious substitute to the homemade version. It comes in an 8 ounce box and you will also need to purchase one pound of your favorite seafood, chopped sausage, ham, or chicken to add to the dish to make it a meal. We usually add a couple of pieces of shredded chicken breasts and a half a pound of spicy Italian sausage.

Each package of Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix contains the following ingredients: parboiled rice enriched with ferric orthophosphate (iron), niacine, thiamine mononitrate and folic acid, onion, chicken bouillon (salt, hydrolyzed corn gluten and soy protein, sugar, soy flour, corn starch, chicken fat, partially hydrogenated cottonseed and soy oil, onion powder, chicken meat, turmeric, garlic powder, spices, disodium guanylate) and hydorlized soy protein. It also contains 2% or less of red pepper, paprika, chili powder, bell peppers, garlic and silicon dioxide. The silicon dioxide is added to help prevent caking.

Each serving of Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix contains 130 calories. The contents of an eight box will provide six 1/4 cup servings but we usually need to use two boxes and add the meat in order to make enough to feed our family. Each serving has 560 milligrams of sodium, 29 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of sugars, 1gram of protein, 6% vitamin A, 2% vitamin C and 8% iron. These values are based on a 2,000 calorie a day diet.

Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix is an easy dish to prepare and that is probably one of the reasons our sons eat so much of it. In a microwavable container you combine 2 1/4 cups cold water, the contents of the box and the meat that has already been cooked. Cook on high for 5 minutes and then reduce to 50% power. Allow the dish to cook for 25 minutes and then sit for 5 minutes before serving.

It is faster and in my opinion easier to just cook the Tony Chachere's Creole Jambalaya Mix on the stovetop. You cook the meat of your choice and then in a large saucepan you combine the meat with 2 3/4 cups of water and the contents of the box. You bring everything to a boil, cover the dish, reduce the heat and then allow it to simmer for twenty-five minutes.

This is a hearty meal and the spice blend is very satisfying. It is not a dish for people who dislike spicy foods but then again most Creole foods are not made to cater to those who dislike spicy foods. It isn’t hot though and that is pleasing to many people. When we make it from scratch we use a lot of fresh peppers and in this version there are only a few slices of pepper sprinkled throughout it. I also like lots of onion in mine but this dish only contains a hint of it. All that aside this is one of the few boxed dishes that we buy and that is because it has a great flavor that the whole family enjoys.

Thanks for reading and rating.
