johnnywinter's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 for PlayStation 2
I have been playing Tony Hawk Proskater since the beginning, and I have to say that they are always a good PlayStation 2 buy, I can't however recommend them for any other system; gamecube, xbox, pc. This is probably due to the PS2 controller having more buttons, and while a keyboard has much more buttons, they made it too complicated.
Anyways, Tony Hawk 4, eh? I have to say that this game is excellent and anything above, a great buy for anyone at any age. The graphics are excellent, good lighting, textures, and mapping, the soundtrack, once again is rockin out, and almost all the songs are perfect for everyone.
The gameplay in THPS 4, is completely redone. Now, rather than having a list of goals for every level, you have characters scattered throughout the level, and every last one of 'em wants your help, or has a challenge in mind, and these are you're new goals.
This is an improvement because rather the boring old ten goals on a list, you get to have about like 20 or so per level. Which makes the life of the game much longer. Such as in THPS 3, I would beat the game in like a day, and have seemed to have thrown $50 bucks down the drain, yes it was a good game, but it was very, very short, but THPS 4 redefines this factor, making it a much, much better game.
Another nice added idea to the game is the extra challenge at the end. Each player, even customs, have an extra challenge at the end of the game where they really prove themselves as a pro, I don't want to give away any of the challenges, so I won't, but I still say they were great and a nice end-of-the career challenge.
As far as custom skaters are in this game, I would have to say that it is not as good as THPS 3, or #4's sequel Tony Hawk's Underground (THUG), (which happens to be a very well developed game that I never have stopped playing.), in 4, it's simple to explain what they did wrong, basic selection. Neversoft never put in enough hair styles, and whatnot. I could never really look like me, until THUG.
Overall replay value is high and you will probably never stop playing it as far as career mode goes, but I think that Proskater 3 has the best online/ multiplayer mode of the whole series. The gameplay is smooth and it can't lag due to the fact it's not on a computer.
I would definately recommend buying this game for yourself or for a friend, your kids, nephews, girl nephews, and everyone else. This game is definately one that everyone can enjoy.
