jadzia66's Full Review: Catherine Matthias - Too Many Balloons
My daughter, who is now 6 1/2, has already become an excellent reader and loves library day at school. Not only do the kids go to the library once a week but if they happen to have their library books with them during the week, they can also go during rest time. Needless to say, we do a lot of reading around here. Too Many Balloons is Courtney's current library book and one she has really enjoyed reading.
All About Too Many Balloons
Too Many Balloons is an older book with a copyright date of 1982. It has 29 pages and is considered a picture book, not a chapter book. It is written by Catherine Matthias and illustrated by Gene Sharp. It was prepared under the direction of Robert Hillerich, PH.D.
Too Many Balloons is called a "rookie reader" that is put out by Children's Press, which is a division of Grolier Publishing. It also says its put out by Regensteiner Publishing Enterprises, Inc. so the two companies must be in collaboration somehow. Its ISBN # is 0-516-03633-5.
The Story
A little boy goes to the zoo and buys a balloon which he
shows to a lion. The lion seems to like the balloon so the little boy buys 2 more balloons and shows them to the giraffes. The giraffes liked the balloons so the little boy buys 3 more balloons and showed them to the seals. The little boy keeps buying more and more balloons to show to all the animals until he buys all the balloons that are for sale. In fact, he ends up buying so many balloons that they lift him right up into the sky.
Why We Like Too Many Balloon
What I really like about Too Many Balloons is the counting and color matching aspects of the book. Every time the little boy buys his balloons, he matches the color and number of the balloons with the color and number of the animals he's showing the balloons to. For example, he buys 2 yellow balloons and shows them to 2 yellow giraffes, he buys 8 purple balloons and shows them to 8 purple peacocks and so on. Also, in the back of the book is a word list with 50 of the words that are in this book, which you then have your child read to you if they are in need of more practice.
Courtney liked Too Many Balloons because she was able to easily read it and she really loved the fact that at the end of the book, the little boy was lifted right into the air.
She also pointed out that he wasn't good at sharing because he bought all the balloons and didn't save any for the other children.
All in all, Too Many Balloons was a great library pick that everyone enjoyed.
