| Darkmistress's Full Review: Toot and Puddle: A Present for Toot Books |
I stumbled across Toot & Puddle while looking for the perfect gift for my sister’s second child, Jacob. For the first 2 years of his life, Jake had the world by the tail. He was the baby, doted on by three grandparents, two aunts and two uncles (bonus: aunts and uncles who have no children of their own.) Plus he had an older brother, Jonathan, who could teach him how to do things better and faster than the brother had done them on his own (scaring the bejeesus out of my sister.) And then, just 6 days before his second birthday the world altered irrevocably. My sister gave birth to Joshua. Jake, ever unsure of his place, was even more unsecure.
The details of how I came across Toot & Puddle are fuzzy now, but the story was perfect. Toot and Puddle are brothers and pigs. Toot craves adventure; Puddle craves home. Toot leaves Woodcock Pocket to explore the world; Puddle explores Woodcock Pocket. The story is told through a series of letters between the brothers and is illustrated in luminous water color. The water colors are so wonderful that I am tempted to buy one for myself, cut out my favorites and have them framed. My husband is an artist and we have many artist friends; we have artwork suitable for framing stuffed in drawers, piled on floors and tucked in closets, but I would make room for Holly Hobbie’s incredible illustrations (particularly Toot in India.)
The story of the two pigs doing what they enjoy most is what drew me to this one in particular. Jake wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do. He couldn’t be Jonathan because Jonathan was already doing that and he wasn’t the baby any more. I was hoping that in some strange way, Jake would understand that you do what you want to do and in the end, you come home and Puddle makes a great dinner (or something like that.) And even if he didn’t get the message, it’s still a beautiful book, two things (beautiful and book) that are very important to me when I buy gifts for my nephews.
