Pretty good snow thrower for the money

Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Lightweight, no gas to fill or oil to change. Works well on New England Snow
Cons:Electric Cord, snow deeper than 8 or 10 inches may be a challenge.
The Bottom Line: A good snow thrower for the money. Good for taking care of the deck, quick touch ups or clearing paths and walk ways.
We live in NH where we get a fair amount of snow. We have had an Ariens Snow Thrower for about 10 years now (subject of another review). But the Ariens is too heavy for my wife to start and handle up and down our driveway. She does enjoys getting out and doing some snow shoveling. But she actually caught a mild case of pneumonia after some shoveling recently. So I suggested that we look for a lightweight electric snow thrower to help her in the future.

The Toro 1800 Power Curve was recommended to me by a co-worker. She had used hers for clearing her walkways and drive ways for about 3 years and has been very happy with it. So we decided to purchase one.
Before purchasing, I did some research. And by a large majority, everyone has had great experience with it. A very small percentage had problems with the belt slipping (which seemed to be evident by a burnt rubber smell), and to an even lesser extent was an electric motor problem, but only reported by one person. So I was satisfied with the prospect.
I had a chance to try it out on some crusted over snow right after we purchased it. And it worked pretty good. The biggest problem with crusted over snow, is that this machine is too light to dig in; it would ride right on top of the crust. But I found that if I tramped down a small patch the size of the snow thrower, it would then dig right through the crust. And it threw the snow a good 15 to 25 feet.
The auger / snow thrower part is plastic, so I wouldn't want to use it crusty snow or in rocky/stony locations too often. But the parts are replaceable, and reasonably priced. The Toro website has a great parts look up page that let you find replacement part number. The chute is adjustable left to right using the common style hand crank. The up/down adjustment of the chute is done by hand by tapping it. Ours has been a bit loose, so it needs frequent adjustment. I think this is easily correctable by tightening the chute hinge bolts a bit.
Because the parts are plastic, it's light weight, and very easy to get it up and down from our deck. And we also find it very useful for clearing off the deck, which I would never do with a snow blower with metal parts and a gas engine.
My wife has enjoyed using it the few times that we've received snowfall. It is very easy for her to handle. The cord is something that you have to watch out for, but you do get used to that after while.
So if you are looking for a good alternative to the old fashioned shovel, I'd recommend that you consider the Toro 1800 Power Curve.
