Pros:Effective, quiet, environmentally friendly
Cons:Has trouble with thicker grass, pricey
I recently bought a home and for the first time I had to deal with mowing a lawn (albeit a relatively small one on my 1/8th acre lot). After running over a cord numerous times as a teenager using an electric mower and not really caring for the idea of storing gas in my garage, I opted for the pricey, but effective cordless Toro rechargeable E24.
A full charge supposedly takes 8-12 hours (which I've found to be accurate) and will run 60 minutes on average-height grass. The first time I used it was with some pretty thick grass (much of it over 6 inches) and it did use noticeably more of the battery. I did have to slow down considerably, too, as it seemed to have some trouble with the thicker grass. During subsequent mowings, however, it worked wonderfully, with a full charge allowing me to do both my front and backyards.
There are a number of nice things about this mower. First and foremost is the convenience of gas with the safety of electric -- no plugs to mess with while mowing and no potentially dangerous gas cans to store. Secondly, this mower can mulch the grass as you cut it, a nice, environmentally friendly alternative to bagging the grass. Lastly, the mower is remarkably quiet -- one can actually hold a conversation at a normal level while mowing.
I'm pleased with my first mower purchase. While I don't think this particular model would do well on a larger lawn, it does more than an adequate job on my larger-than-postage-stamp lawn. I actually don't mind mowing the lawn all that much. :)
