| rmjohn's Full Review: Toro Super Recycler Mower |
After moving into a new home my eleven year old, 4 horsepower Craftsman mower was literally choked to death by the thickness of my backyard lawn forcing me to seek a more capable performer. After extensive research in the spring of 2006 I narrowed my choices down to two, this Toro and a comparable Honda Harmony. Despite the fact that the Honda was regarded slightly higher (primarily due to the Honda engine) I selected the Toro in large part because it was priced slightly less, but also because its an American company.
The Toro SR4 20058 is a very highly capable, outstanding performer, but comes with a very steep price. This mower features an electric key start which I erroneously justified by believing it would greatly assist my wife and actually encourage her to use the mower on occasion. Unfortunately, that had no effect she avoids it like the plague. However, I do find it quite useful in eliminating repeated tugs of a rip cord as this mower starts effortlessly and swiftly with just a twist of the wrist much like a car.
Once you get rolling the personal pace system (which is the self propulsion) is immediately engaged and its responsive to the speed at which you're walking up to 4 mph which is a very nice feature in that YOU, rather than the mower actually controls the pace. This mower gives you three options to handle the grass clippings. Rear bagging, side discharge or mulching. I typically opt to mulch unless I'm bagging leaves, because aside from the mulching benefit to a lawn, the powerful 6.5 horsepower engine glides effortlessly over even the thickest lawns and combined with the optimally designed deck underside, it mulches the clippings so finely that you'd be very hard pressed to find any clippings anywhere. It mulches extremely well so clumpings are a thing of past with this machine. The result is a very well cut, even and beautiful lawn.
The blade clutch is a useful feature in that it kills the blade instead of the engine when you release the handle bar enabling you to step away briefly to attend to the occasional errant sprinkler head or to remove lawn debris ie.. without having to restart the engine. This actually helps to achieve the visually appealing straightly mowed lines on the lawn too, because one would easily be tempted to mow around obstructions while grabbing them on the way by which causes crooked lines, all to prevent having to restart the engine.
Toro stands behind this product with the best warranty in the industry! With a 5 year full coverage warranty which stipulates that if anything goes wrong under normal use and maintenance Toro will repair it free which relatively speaking is exceptional and fair enough, but they also go so far as to guarantee for that same 5 years, that it will start on the first or second pull each time or they will fix that for free. That was a clincher for me!
