skiman78's Full Review: Toshiba HD-A2 Player HD-DVD Player
As an early adopter of technology, there is always risk in buying into a new format. HD-DVD is no exception. With the current "war" with Blu-Ray, it is uncertain who the winner will be but that is risk we taking buying into new technology early. Now onto the player itself.
Picture Quality:
Given a good HD conversion or a movie filmed in HD, the picture quality is fantastic. Be careful when judging the picture quality based on a movie shot on analog film as some ports are poorly executed. However most titles I have viewed on this unit look great. A few titles to consider to experience the full HD Picture are Batman Begins, Transformers and the Matrix Trilogy.
Sound Quality:
The unit supports many of the newest audio codecs including TrueHD, DD, DTS-HD and DTS. When paired with an appropriate receiver and speakers, the sound is beyond awesome. I currently run my system via wireless Sennheiser headphones run directly from the player and the sound is amazing.
Features:
Besides the ability to play HD-DVDs, the best feature included in this unit is its ability to upconvert your current DVDs to NEAR high definition quality. Most good upconverting DVD players will cost as much if not more than this unit (Oppo makes one of the best uponverters). The menu system is very intuitive and easy to use. All HD-DVD players use an overlay menu that will allow you access the menu without stopping the movie. It also has full audio support for CDs.
Overall:
I would highly recommend this unit for anyone wanting to experience HD without a huge investment. Prices on this unit are falling quickly. Even if this format is phased out, the unit upconverts current DVDs extremely well! HD-DVD discs are also dropping quickly as well.
