| mountaineerman's Full Review: Toshiba SD-1800 DVD Player |
I received this DVD player as a Christmas present from my parents. I think it was ordered from the JCPenney catalog for around $100. So far I have been quite happy with this DVD player.
It offers a lot of features for the price and if you are considering a lower price DVD player I would recommend this over the generic models you will find at Wal-Mart. I like the fact of a nice display on the front right side that will tell you all the information. It is easy to read and in combination with the on screen display it makes this DVD player very easy to use. For the price there are a lot of inputs and outputs on the back and I am not going into detail on these because you can find the specs on line at toshiba's website if you want to know. One thing that it does not offer is an optical port out. From what I have read the very best quality sound comes from using an optical port to your receiver. Not to worry however it does offer a digital coaxial audio output and that works just about as good.
I have used it to play CD's, MP3 disks, and DVD's. It plays all without a hitch. If you are going to burn an MP3 disk on your computer you need to follow some simple rules about file names and related things that are in the owners manual. I burned an MP3 disk with about 100 songs on it with an Apple iBook and had no problems playing the disk.
The remote works well, but it is small with a lot of buttons that feel the same. It is not hard to use, but requires some time to get used to and a little light. It can be a little hard to use in the dark.
I currently have the DVD player hooked up to a 27" Sylvania TV and an RCA 500W home theater system and I can tell you that picture quality and sound quality is excellent. Remember this is not a top of the line player so you have to judge it against it's peers and not players that cost a lot more. When you put it up against other $80-100 DVD players, it becomes apparent that the Toshiba is a good value. So far I have not had any problems with it and from what I have seen and read Toshiba makes some of the better DVD players out there so I think it would be a safe buy for the money.
