| esaperst's Full Review: Toshiba SD-3109U DVD Player |
I purchased this unit last summer as part of a new home theater. What I was looking for was DTS capability, component outputs, and a reasonable price as the final DVD standards were still slightly unstable. The unit delivered these features and thus far has functioned without any trouble.
I have matched it to a Rotel 965 Receiver and into a Mitsubishi 50" projection. Not HDTV, but a nice picture. The picture from the component outputs is fantastic, and the multiple outputs are great to run the DVD picture through the A/V receiver so you can do your setup and onscreen programming before switching to the high end component connections.
For those that don't know this ... component connections traditional drive directly into the TV's beam controls. You can't put an A/V receiver in between the DVD and the TV using these outputs. Therefor you can not overlay a menu on top of the signal from the receiver. It also bypasses the tuner in the TV, eliminating extra passthroughs and thus reducing signal degradation.
Only problem I've found is that certain CD's don't play well. Preliminary research turns up that this has something to do with the type of laser used. If CD's are cut slightly off they won't work properly in a DVD player using one type of laser, but the same CD will work in a standard run of the mill CD player. I'd say it's just easier to buy a run of the mill CD player and a DVD than spend the extra cash to get the multiple laser types that handle both scenerios.
