| Bluesguy2770's Full Review: Toshiba SD-3109U DVD Player |
I bought this DVD player about a year ago (10/99). I had been watching for an affordable DVD player, but had also read that a lot of them don't perform perfectly w/ all movies. I had read the reviews and the 2109 was highly recommend on a lot of sites. I found the 3109 which is exactly the same as the 2109 except it has a dual tray for two DVDs. I found the 3109 for a great price...$299...which was about $100 cheaper than I could buy it anywhere else, online or local.
I got the 3109 and have been very happy w/ it ever since that time. It has performed perfectly for any movie that I have watched. The dual tray is nice, but I haven't really found a need for it yet.
I was disappointed that my receiver (or any remotes) remote would not control the DVD player. Not too big of a deal, but it would be nice to get some basic features from another remote. Speaking of the remote, it's not that great. Some things are too intuitive. I had to get the manual to figure out how to do fast forward and reverse. You have to hold the skip buttons down and the speed increases. I always thought the remote should be self-explanatory. It would also be nice if the remote were backlit. The glow-in the dark buttons are nice...for about two minutes. After that you are out of luck.
Still, it comes down to how well it plays the movies...and it does a great job. All the reviews from other sites applaud Toshiba as the best...and the 2109 and 3109 are the best of those. Everything seems to decode perfectly and the picture quality is as perfect as you'd expect it to be. I have yet to see any glitches in playback for any movie.
