| lavsalon's Full Review: Toshiba SD-3109U DVD Player |
This last summer our CD player died; about the same time we visited a friend who had a DVD/home theater setup that wasn't too involved and was quite impressive. As DVD players play CD's we decided to not replace the CD player, but purchase a DVD player and have it function for both purposes.
After a lot of reading, I narrowed the field to just a few machines, all around the $500 price range. But I really liked the features of the Toshiba 3109. It has DD and DTS output, just in case I couldn't afford to upgrade my receiver (that was done several months later). It also has outputs for component TV and SVHS outputs. The remote control is very simple to use.
My one problem with the player wasn't a fault of the player, but of the TV set. It's a Zenith about 9-10 years old. Long before the time of SVHS and component inputs. The Toshiba 3109 wasn't able to connect directly to our TV. I ended up connecting directly into the VCR to get to the TV. Not ideal, but it worked. Unfortunately, the VCR assumed that every time we watched a DVD disc, we were trying to copy the video onto VHS tape and would modulate the luminence of the image (as per the copyright chip). DVD videos were horrible to watch. To resolve the problem, I replaced the receiver. DVD videos are now a pleasure to watch!
The Toshiba 3109 also plays HDCD's but I've yet run across any to try. It also supports all the parental lockdown features that can be embedded in DVDs.
