Another Top Value in Progressive Scan DVD, with a twist...
Written: Dec 08 '02
I wrote up Toshiba's SD 3800 recently. Surely it is one of the best values to be had in progressive scan DVD, packed with features and goodies -- It was the player of choice for this price. You can check THAT review out here, as it goes together perfectly with the 4800:

Toshiba's mid-line progressive scan model, like its little brother SD 3800, is equipped with an impressive list of features and capabilities; These include a great Progressive Scan DVD player with smooth transitions and excellent picture quality, superb sound and decoding, a digital-photo CD picture viewer, multiple surround environments and Dolby/DTS decoding (as opposed to pass-thru) PLUS actual 6-channel RCA-level outputs, for those who have a multi-channel surround receiver BUT one that does not decode DTS or Dolby 5.1 surround formats. The 6 channel output in fact, is the only thing that sets the 4800 apart from the 3800, which is why I personally feel the 3800 is the best value, IF you have a Dolby/DTS decoding receiver which accepts Digital-Coax or Optical-Digital input (because the 3800 doesn't have 6 seperate RCA outs to carry the signal).
Toshiba's SD 4800 is built on it's proven SD platform. Toshiba's list price for the SD 4800 is 279.00, however you'll see it available at most top retailers for 169-189 AND the price can be negotiated down to the 150-160 range relatively easily. Considering the list of features you get, this is still a remarkable deal, although you can save yourself another few bucks and pay a modest 130.00 like I paid for the SD 3800... The list of SD 4800 features is below:

The SD 4800 incorporates Toshiba's Super ColorStream Pro® Component Video Outputs -- The picture quality is excellent, very crisp imaging and color saturation is very rich and vibrant. The outstanding color and overall picture quality appeared, to me, a bit nicer than my own Sony NS-715P. This made me second guess my prior Sony purchase a bit, however considering the Toshiba wasn't available at that time AND when it first came out (about a month after my Sony purchase) it was offered at a much higher price of 239.00) made my second-guessing irrelevant. Bottom line however, is the Toshiba player is spectacularly smooth and vibrant picture wise - the Super ColorStream technology really makes a difference: Toshiba utilizes a digital picture filter which virtually eliminates all kinds of NTSC artifacts. GONE are picture noise, crawl and dot-flicker, which accounts for the unparralelled smooth-playing characteristics of this machine. Additionally Toshiba's PLUGE technology, although gimmicky sounding, REALLY does aid in making blacks appear blacker, ESPECIALLY on a rear-projection TV (where the vividness of black sometimes gets lost). For this reason, it is a perfect match for rear-projection wide-screen televsions -- speaking of which...
The entire Toshiba SD line of players is equipped with 540-baseline resolution expansion tool. The player matches perfectly with Toshiba's "TheatreWide" line of televisions like my 42" HDTV 42HX81

The unit goes perfectly with these TV's because Toshiba's line-doubling technology built into the TV takes an ordinary digital signal with a resolution under 540 and brings it up to 540 lines automatically. Now, with the smoother playback qualities of an SD player, the signal is already sent in optimal 540 line format and doesn't need to be expanded by the television. When I compare the SD player's video signal to my Sony NS-715P, the difference is noticeable, and the picture output of the SD 4800 DOES appear crisper, at least on my own 42HX81 HDTV...
Sound Quality wise, Toshiba has also done a fine job. THe player decodes industry standard surround formats (Dolby and DTS) and offers multiple output configuration ability, INCLUDING the aforementioned 6 channel RCA. For those of you using a 2 speaker stereo setup, Toshiba's N-2-2 spatializer offers a simulated surround based on Dopler-type frequency shifts, and it actually works! The WEGA TV is kept in the den, where we only have a 2 speaker setup (for the time being) and the N-2-2 really enhanced the sound staging of the room - well done Toshiba. The player also supports DVD audio (another nice touch, a notch above alot of other players costing more) AND Toshiba's DIALOGUE feature helps improve center channel levels making dialogues more comprehensible -- We all know they tend to get lost in background noise on some of the action flics (among others).
Toshiba's digital CD picture viewer will become a great tool for anyone with a digital camera. CD media is fast becoming a great way to store picture media, since it doesn't degrade, lose any color or quality AND it is much cheaper, since you don't have to pay a lab to process your images. Reminiscing and looking at good times past has never been easier - Toshiba's SD 4800 has an easy-to-use efficient and sensible system for looking at CD-store images. Not to mention the ability not only to play them back, but manipulate the image on screen, invert, zoom in or out etc. This is a great tool and Toshiba opted to offer it without upping the price! The remote control is easy to use and efficiently controls all aspects of the unit, including the above picture viewer.
The bottom line, once again, is Toshiba has brought an excellent quality Progressive Scan DVD player to market with impressive feature and all the goodies for a wonderful price. Better Still, if the 6 channel RCA outs are unnecessary, you can have the same unit for 30 to 50 bucks cheaper by getting SD 3800, since the features are identical except for those 6-way outs! Lately, Toshiba has been really on the ball on terms of offering multi-featured, high-quality machines WITHOUT sacrificing a gerat price. For this reason, the SD 4800 continues Toshiba's quest to maintain value and quality. This is a fine DVD player and at this price, is very tough to beat. Well done Toshiba.
