| gallianowebb's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 1905-S277 (PS190U-000FRXB) PC No... |
Pros: Everything, for the price (600$ on ebay)the s277 initially appealed to me because of the 3 1/2 inch floppy disc drive, which I use for typing papers and printing them on the older computers at schools. However, The DVD drive, dual PC slots, USB and speakers make this a flexible and fun computer. Also the speed and dexterity of it is amazing. I can surf the net, burn a CD whiles typing a paper and printing at the same time with out worrying about crashes and freezes. Alot of owners complained about the noise of the fan and heat but I did not find the light humming to be a problem. In fact, there is some beauty to the s277 cooling system; Finally laptop makers decided to make a cooling fan that blows hot air out, and not suck air (and dust, etc..) in to cool the CPU. This means a cleaner and healthier system. Even at $1300 i think the s277 is a good deal. I never really like the older toshiba laptops for style but this series has a futuristic, durable and original finish that exceeds the design of most of the newer laptop. In response to the negative comments on lack of wireless, bluetooth, firewire and SD functions, I must disagree. I easily bought a wireless 802.11a/b/g PC card, an all in one SD, Memorystick, Smartmedia and compactflash" PC card adapter, an all in one USB 2.0 and firewire PC card adapter, and a bluetooth usb adapter for the s277. What's good here is that as the digital technology evolve I dont have to buy a new notebook, I can just buy a new PC card or USB adapter which is far easier to replace. This is why I love the dual PC card slots as my favorite feature. The speakers are also great because you can pick from a multitude of settings for what you're doing whether gaming, dvd, cd playback, etc... And now I come to the main reason I recommend the s277; the hidden functions in the touchpad. You can adjust the mouse pad to have up-down/left-right scroll wheel functions and back and forward tap zones (for web pages) all at once or in seperate combinations. you'll notice this the most on newer laptops made by HP/compaq as the reserve a right column on the touchpad for up-down scrolling. However, the s277 excels with this touchpad technology. Another over all plus it that the user can configure alot, i mean alot, of settings. I also love the power management feature as well.
Cons: Weight! With a 2 pound battery and 2 pound adapter any way you dice it the s277 is one heavy mother. put a CD or DVD in there and a few PC card peripherals and you're up to 10 pounds. However unlike other heavy laptop the s277 seem to also feel very sturdy. I mean if I ever dropped it I would expect it to put a hole in the floor and not be damaged. I love this solid feel but its alittle too much. The Screen is annoyingly blurry under microscopic inspection (especially when using Word or Excel). To fix this you can raise the resolution to 1600x1200 but it only expands the overall screen beyond the 15inch border of the notebook's screen. This is not very feasible for anything short of using the TV out option to a big screen TV. Also the screen is not as bright and crisp as my older 2000 Compaq presario 18xl280 and a 1999 B series fujusti that I once had. I noticed this lack of screen quality in ALL Toshiba laptops EXCEPT the 5205-s705. However, You dont notice the mediocre screen much if at all when browsing the internet, playing DVDs or playing games so its not that big a deal. Also another gripe is the TouchPad. I know it has good features but the material is too sticky and rough for proper mouse arrow control. I dont understand why and I could be my fingers. I also wish that more ports were on the side instead of the back (such as the USBs, TV out, modem and LAN jacks).
