Pros: Pentium 4 cpu, ATI Radeon graphics, 256mb RAM standard, CDRW/DVD combo drive
Cons: Non-mobile version of P4 means less battery life, only 16mb video RAM
The Bottom Line: If you need a powerful system at a reasonable price & performance is your concern over portability, this is the one to buy.

| jt325i's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 1905-S277 (PS190U-000FRXB) PC No... |
I bought this unit the week it came out. I've been very happy with it. Came with Windows XP but drivers are on Toshibas site to run Windows 2000 if you chose. (I preferred it to XP myself) 256mb RAM standard means the OS will run well w/minimal swapping. The ATI Radeon 16mb video has enough power to run most fairly recent games w/decent performance. Despite the fact the unit doesn't have a mobile P4 (running @ 1.6GHz), it still gets 2 hours on the lithium-ion battery. That is about average for a portable these days. The unit is a bit on the heavy side so if you need maximum portability this unit isn't for you. It is built with a preference for power at a reasonable price. The 15" screen is of excellent quality & I had no bad pixels on mine. The CDRW drive & DVD combo comes in very handy although I seldom watch movies on it. I've used the burner far more. The touch pad is a bit finicky & one of the few areas I think the unit could have been improved. The software enables you to make adjustments but it took some getting used to over a touchpoint style mouse. The front cd player controls are a nice touch if you want to listen to an audio cd in the unit with the lid closed. I bought an 802.11b wireless card so I could use the unit in my living room. I seldom travel with it. The keyboard is full size and easy to type on. (I'm typing this now on it) My main reason for going with Toshiba is because they are well established in the portable business. You can go to their website & get every driver with minimal hassle. I've never had to call their tech support and I think frankly that is the best indication of the quality of the unit. I would definitely have no problem recommending this unit to somebody looking for a good portable w/multimedia capability.
Update: I recently upgraded the unit to its maximum 512mb RAM & added the latest BIOS update (v1.03). Unit is still working perfectly. I'm a happy customer!
