| cptsulu's Full Review: Toshiba DOCSIS Cable PCX1100 (DAZ8811F-R) |
Most of my friends with broadband use the Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem and have great experiences. A Fry's Electronics sales associate even recommended it. Trusting their experience, I decided to purchase it in hopes it would give me the same pleasure.
Not surprisingly, they were right. For a small device the modem is packaged in a relatively large box, suggesting it's filled with a lot of extra content. Opening the box I found a DC adapter, a USB cable, ethernet cable, driver CD, and manual. The contents are well packaged, guaranteeing it was safely shipped and works the moment it's plugged in. Moreover it comes with everything you need, so there's no need to purchase extra necessities like ethernet cables.
One of the most important package contents is the manual. Thumbing through, I found it to be very comprehensive and helpful. It walks through both installing the modem via USB or ethernet, supporting all Windows operating systems from Windows 95 to XP. The text is targeted towards not too technical people so virtually anyone, no matter how computer experienced, can install the product.
And just as an inexperienced computer user would like, installation is a breeze. It can be installed through USB or ethernet. If you don't have an ehternet card, then you can choose USB and vice versa. This is a good idea since almost anyone has a computer capable to support the modem, broadening its appeal. I chose the ethernet installation route, simply plugging the modem into my computer and it worked. It's that simple. I assume the USB route is just as simple.
Using the modem, I don't notice any connection instabilities; the modem never disconnects and my transfer rates are constant. Overall, I think Toshiba produced a top quality product. It comes with everything you need, like ethernet and USB cables, so you don't have to purchase extra items; it's easy to install; and it's a reliable product.
