Pros: Good quality, sturdy machine with video and written instructions.
Cons: Having to disconnect the pulleys in order to use the wing in mid workout.
It was Saturday morning. I was drinking my coffee and flipping through the channels on the TV. Of course, Saturday morning, paid programming on practically every channel. I wasn't really interested when I first saw Christie Brinkley and Chuck Norris plugging the Total Gym Platinum. However, as I saw how easy it seemed and how cheap it was, I thought, why not? I can afford four payments of $58.75. I certainly can't afford a regular home gym. Five days later my Total Gym Platinum was delivered to my door.
The Total Gym Platinum came fully assembled in the box with a stainless steel frame. Included : Glide Board, Squat Stand, pulleys, cables and handles, Wing, Video and Total Gym Exercise Flipchart with stand. It took me about thirty minutes to put the major parts together. The video walks you through it.
It also came with these safety instructions:
Do not operate this equipment if it is not completely assembled.
All equipment should be set up and operated on solid level surfaces only.
All equipment including cables and pulleys should be checked for wear before use.
Do not operate equipment with long loose hair or clothing.
Care should be taken when getting on and off equipment.
Do not over-exert yourself or work to exhaustion.
The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer MAY CAUSE INJURIES.
Lastly: Always consult your physician before starting a workout regimen.
The aim of the Total Gym is to let you exercise without placing strain on the joints. It allows you to do bi-lateral movement, unilateral movement and static equilibrium exercises. Using your own body weight allows you to lift 6% to 60%. It enables you to do crunches, squats, curls, bench presses and other exercises. The video goes into detail about all exercises included in the following programs or you can use the Exercise flipchart which sits on a handy stand attached to the right of the machine.
Exercise Programs include:
Beginner basic fitness for men and women
Intermediate Mens and Womens
Advanced Mens and Womens Body Building
Sport Specific Programs include skiing, golf, tennis, running and walking
You can also custom design your workout from these separate programs.
The Frame: The frame is made of stainless steel and once the safety hitch is locked in, it is very sturdy and steady.
The Glide Board: The major part of the equipment is somewhat padded for comfort and measures 14 by 42.
The Squat Stand: This is made of a very durable hard plastic which would be very difficult to break.
The Handles: These attach to the cables and pulleys and are made of steel with hard rubber hand-grips.
The Wing: Also made of steel with hard rubber grips, this is a sturdy little attachment.
I think the quality of the Total Gym Platinum is outstanding. Nothing about is flimsy. It seems to be a very well made piece of equipment. You will need a space of at least 6 feet by 12 feet in order to operate the Total Gym Platinum. Mine is set up in my bedroom but takes a rather large portion of it.
After a simple set-up, I found that the video or the Flipchart did a great job of guiding me through the exercises starting with a 10 to 15 minute workout and gradually increasing to more difficult and lengthier exercises. I liked that I could use my own pace and could adjust the height to my own preferences for each exercise. I liked the sturdiness of the machine which made it easy to exercise without worrying about injuries. I liked the results of the programs provided as over a span of two months, I lost 15 lbs but that also included speed-walking daily. I noticed my muscles toning as I was going along. Lastly, I liked the price. It was well worth it.
I only had one dislike but it was a pretty important one. I did not like the fact that in order to use the wing, I had to disconnect the pulleys and vice-versa. In order to do this I had to get down on all fours to look underneath the machine to release the cables. This interrupted my workout and was a constant frustration. So much so that I would quit at times. This seemed to be a chore after using regular gym equipment.
I like the Total Gym Platinum and am glad I bought it. Its quality is top notch for the price. I believe that the exercises it provides can only better anybodys exercise regimen and can bring a home gym to you at a price practically anyone can afford. However, I still get frustrated with its different setups for each exercise which leads me to believe that others also will. I think it needs improvement in this area.
