| atamogaokashii's Full Review: Totino'S Cheesy Taco Flavor Pizza Rolls Frozen Foo... |
Okay, yes, I admit it. I do eat these things every once in awhile. When I was younger, I thought I hated them, until one fateful day at my cousins house when he popped these in the microwave and served them to me on a plate that I became hooked.
What am I talking about? Im talking about Totinos Pizza Rolls. I dont know who Totino is, but he surely makes a good snack. Pizza Rolls are little rectangles of pastry stuffed with pizza toppings. They are about an inch long. They dont really taste like pizza to me, but that doesnt matter. They could be described as small, fat ravioli that are baked, and have a crispy shell.
Im reviewing the cheesy taco flavor, which is my favorite. There are also other flavors available which include: cheese, combo, pepperoni, sausage, supreme, three meat, triple cheese. There are also Mega Pizza Rolls, I noticed, but I havent tried those.
Cheesy taco flavor consists of taco flavored beef and cheese. I guess because Mexican food is my favorite type of food, that is why I enjoy these so much. Although, they dont really taste like tacos, the taste is just spicy (not hot spicy) in a good way that the flavor is very wonderful.
Pizza Rolls are found in the frozen foods section of your supermarket. I only buy them on sale or with a coupon, as they are kind of expensive. I prefer to buy the 40-count 19.8 oz bag to get the best value for my money. But the smaller size that Im reviewing is good if you dont want too much unhealthy food in the house, and you dont have any children. This size comes in a box, is 7.5 oz and contains 15 pizza rolls.
These are really easy to prepare. I prefer them in the oven rather than the microwave. They come out crispier in the oven, like most everything else. The directions state to heat the oven to 425 degrees, bake them for 10-11 minutes and then let stand for two minutes. It is important to let them cool off a little before eating them because they will burn your tongue! You can also cook them in the microwave, which I do not do. The directions state to cook them on HIGH for 55 seconds.
Pizza Rolls make a great snack, or perhaps an appetizer before dinner. Im sure kids would love them. They can be a bit messy. If you take a bite out of one, dont be surprised if the filling comes shooting out the other end.
Unfortunately, Pizza Rolls are really not healthy at all. They contain quite a bit of fat and sodium. This is why I dont make a habit of eating them often. I think the serving size of 6 that they have listed on the back of the package is just right.
Some nutrition info from back of package:
Serving size: 6
Calories: 200
Fat: 9 g
Cholestoral: 15 g
Sodium: 470 mg
Total Carbohydrate: 24 g
Protein: 7 g
Also, the ingredient list is kind of scary. Here are the first few ingredients: Enriched flour (Wheat flour, niacin, ferrous sulfate, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), tomato puree (water, tomato paste), pasteurized process American cheese (milk, salt, cheese cultures, enzymes, water, cream, sodium phosphate, artificial color), cooked taco seasoned beef topping (taco seasoned beef, spices, chili pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, texture, vegetable protein (soy flour, caramel color) hydrolyzed corn gluten and soy protein, soy flour, torula yeast, BHA, BHT and citric acid added to protect flavor, partially hydrogenated soybean oil.
These contain wheat, soy and dairy ingredients and are not vegan friendly, obviously.
