Pros: Adjustable, light and strong.
Cons: Nothing I have experienced.
I still have my son's Old Town Field and Stream 1871 Sportsman Canoe tied tightly on the roof of my van after over a week of hiking, climbing, and paddling the canoe on a gorgeous Jordan Pond and spacious Eagle Lake. When I was first packing it up at my son's place he tossed me two little folding chairs. I truthfully didn't know what they were at first. It took but a moment to find out.
Old Town Brand Canoe Chair with Backrest
Like the canoe these seats are also Old Town brand. I don't know much on quality of this brand but my son tells me it's pretty good. The seats are folded in two and open up and are adjusted via nylon straps. The seat can be set in a variety of angles. Though the seat can be placed into a recliner position for me 90 degree is perfect for back support. Those straps also get in the way of my big A as I sit in it but thankfully the straps don't rub my body wrong or hinder my movement.
The seats fit onto the front and back seats of the Old Town Field and Stream Canoe. Most canoes have this kind of flat seat that a band can go around. That's how the seats hold in place. Two nylon straps with plastic quick clips go around the seat and clip together. A pull on the strap fastens this portable seat to the canoe firmly. To take it off I reach under the seat and squeeze the clip and it opens up easily. The whole seat back and bottom is all in black and feels good to sit on.
Kids Beach Chair
One day during our vacation we were about to trek down to the beach. My wife and I both had beach chairs. Our grand children didn't. One of my grand daughters grabbed one of these seats and said she could use it in the sand. By Golly! It worked just fine. They were easy for the nine and ten year old to carry and they were both supported by the chairs even without being strapped down to a seat.
I only used the seats a few times during the week but my son uses them more often. There are no signs of material wear at the stitching or at, what I perceive as, stress areas. The seats bottom is comfy but it is the lumbar support that makes me feel so good. I can rest once in a while by sitting back and even my paddling position is more comfy. My big belly tends to get in my way kinda pushing my body back and not letting me lean forward too much. The setting of this back rest holds me up perfectly and I feel great, even after an hour of nonstop hard paddling!
I never knew that these seats could make canoeing even easier than it always has been. I can recommend Old Town Brand back support portable seats for a canoe.
One time I left the seats strapped to the canoe and then placed the canoe on my roof and strapped it down. That seemed fine. Unfortunately I didn't have help taking the canoe on and off my van so I had a problem with the seats opening up and getting caught in my roof racks as I tried sliding the canoe off the back. When I had an equal lifter help me the back rest chairs weren't in the way at all and saved me an extra set up step by staying on the canoe.
