User Rating: Very Good
Pros:A cool way to shoot Silly String.
Cons:Water bottle barely works, Silly String is flammable and hard to clean up.
The Bottom Line: Good, messy fun for kids of all ages, but not much more fun than ordinary silly string.
Walking through any toy aisle, its easy to see just how popular the Spiderman movie actually was. Aisles are crammed with official toys and games, some of which are cool others are total and complete nonsense (Soccer Hero Spiderman?!? Hello?). One of the most popular toys spawned from the movie is the Toy Biz Spider Man Dual Action Web Blaster.

The Spider Man Web Blaster consists of five parts: the blue, hard plastic holster which holds the ammo containers and straps to the arm of the user, 2 cans of web blaster ammo, a spraying water bottle, one glove that looks like it was stolen directly from the Columbia Pictures props department, and a can cover to hide the cans of ammunition. The dual action in the title comes from the toys ability to function with both the web blaster ammo and the water bottle.
Setting up the web blaster for use is fairly easy. Simply lace the holster straps through the glove, put on the glove and lock the strap to keep the holster in place, and lock a can of web blaster ammo into position in the holster. Next, line up the cans valve with the pressure point on the triggering mechanism and place the can cover over the can to hide it and complete the look. The device is activated the same way Peter Parker does it; pressing the trigger points in the palm of the glove with the middle and ring fingers levers force against the can valve and causes the purple string to fly out. Fans of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger will love to have this web shooter, and its great for adding extra oomph to any child or adult Spiderman costume. Adults probably wont be able to fit their hands into the kids sized glove, but they can always just separate the glove from the holster and strap it to any garment. Theoretically the procedure is almost the same for the water bottle sprayer.
I say theoretically because though we were able to set up the water blaster correctly per the instructions, getting the water bottle to actually squirt was something different entirely. Once we got the bottle filled and snapped into place, the only thing it did was leak. After fiddling with it for half an hour I got some water to squirt out about six inches, but that was it. I pulled out the water bottle and snapped a can of web fluid back in and the kids were good to go.
In addition, ltrain brought up an excellent point in his review of this product. The cans of Web Blaster Ammo are really just cans of Silly String with a Spider Man license, but regular Silly String cans will not work in this without the special caps that are only on the Web Blaster ammo cans. To save yourself the hassle of running around trying to locate hard-to-find Web Blaster Ammo Refills, make sure you remove and save the special caps before you toss the empty canisters so that you can just slap them onto regular, easy to find cans of the silly stuff.
Also, anyone who has ever messed with Silly String can tell you that this junk sticks to anything and is hard as hell to clean up. If youre picky about having purple crusty stuff all over your walls, ceilings, and embedded in your carpet, you may want to consider telling the kids that they can only play with this outside. Another thing to be aware of with this toy is that the Silly String is indeed flammable, so make sure that children dont play with this near an open flame, such as lit birthday candles for example. One poorly aimed shot and silly string turns to Silly Napalm, and youll be opening the rest of the presents in the ER.
But, when all's said and done, the Toy Biz Spider Man: Dual Action Web Blaster is really just a fancy way to shoot silly string and water. The Spiderman stuff is a cool twist on it, but silly string and water fights are fun regardless of a comic book license. Get this, if your kid is a Spiderman fanatic, but if not, save your money and just buy a box of Silly String.
