Heavens opened and angels sang when I shaved my legs- Trader Joe's Shave Cream
Written: Oct 03 '06 (Updated Apr 22 '07)
Pros:Smooth, close, moisturizing shave, inexpensive, smells great, thick and creamy.
Cons:Takes more effort to rinse off, only at Trader Joe's.
The Bottom Line: The best shaving cream money can buy.
Laaaaaaaa..... that's the sound of the angels singing. I've been yapping about Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream for months now and here it was in the Beauty category all along but I didn't know it! Hallelujah! I can finally tell you all about it and get it out of my system.
I wasn't looking for the ultimate shave cream when I found this one. I actually didn't find it at all. My dear hubby meandered down the health and beauty aisle one day at Trader Joe's and, knowing I'm a bath product junkie, decided to pick me up a wee giftie which turned out to be Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream and I've been hooked ever since. Oh sure, I've cheated on dear TJ many times, but I always end up going back to him and his wonderful shave cream. The nearest TJ's is only about 8 miles away but sometimes I run out and it's not convenient to go there so I go to CVS or Walgreen's and pick up a can of something else that shreds my legs or irritates me and I crawl back to my dear TJ on my hands and knees and he's always right there on the shelf, ready to take me back. I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy. As you can tell, I really like Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream. It's good stuff.
Product Info
As copied from the back of the bottle: This unique blend of lubricating emollients maximizes absorption of water, lifting and softening unwanted hair for effortless razor glide and reducing the risk of nicks, cuts, and irritation. Enriched with pure aloe vera, nourishing vitamin E, and botanical skin conditioners that help deliver a smooth and soothing shave with lasting comfort.
Directions: For unequaled shaving ease, rinse skin thoroughly with warm water, leaving wet for a few minutes. Using a small amount of cream shave, apply a thin layer over damp skin. Shave normally, rinsing razor frequently.
Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream comes in a bright orange tube with white accents and white, blue, and black lettering. The tube holds 8 fluid ounces of shave cream and it stands on its cap so the cream is always right there near the opening and never needs to be squeezed hard or shaken to dispense.
The best shave ever
I've been using Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream for about 3 years now as it quickly became my favorite. The cream is white and very creamy. When applied to the skin it looks like lotion but as it is massaged into the skin a bit, it turns ever so slightly foamy. It's barely noticeable. The cream is quite thick so it stays in place for the duration of the shaving process, even if there is water from your shower dripping onto it. The front of the tube says that it is for men and women alike, however I'm not sure if men would be crazy about the scent which is honey mango. I'm absolutely wild about the scent which, by the way, smells nothing like honey mango to me. It's more coconutty, much like suntan lotion. Just for kicks though, I just asked my husband to take a whiff of the tube and tell me if he'd use it based on the scent. After a few sniffs he said that he would as it smells like suntan lotion and is not terribly fruity. I think it smells delicious and a pleasure to use. A little goes a long way. I only buy one or two tubes a year and I shave my legs and underarms twice a week on average, a little more often in the summer.
The only problem I've run into when using Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream is that it goes on fairly translucent so it can be difficult to see where you've shaved and where you haven't so you just have to kind of feel around to make sure you haven't missed any spots. But it does give a great, close shave.
The shave cream rinses easily but there is definitely more effort involved in rinsing this product off than with other creams and foams. Most foams rinse off easily and well before they should rinse off but TJ's does just rinse down the drain. It takes a bit more water and friction if you want it completely gone. Me, I like to shave with it, rinse just briefly to get all the hair and and big globs of shave cream off of my legs and then I get out of the shower and rub the residue into my legs as a moisturizer. Even when I rinse it completely, TJ's shave cream leaves my legs feeling very soft and moisturized and never irritated. If I use any other product my legs feel irritated and itchy when I step out of the shower but I never have that feeling after using Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream, especially if I don't rinse it all off and leave a slight amount of residue. Most shaving creams say that they moisturize, but TJ's is the only one I've found that truly lives up to that claim.
Trader Joe's Moisturizing Shave Cream is sold exclusively at Trader Joe's stores and retails for $2.99 for an 8 ounce tube(in my area anyway).
