| dbhoutx's Full Review: Travelpro Platinum II 22 Rollaboard Suiter |
I really like my Travel Pro luggage. I actually have three separate pieces right now and plan to add another piece in the near future. The bags are well built and hold up well to abuse handed out by some airlines. (I will not blame every airline because some actually do not go out of their way to destroy the travelers bags.)
I have the Travel Pro Platinum Series luggage. It is now a few years old and is the predecessor to the Platinum II series. They are essentially the same bag with a few minor modifications, all of which represented improvements to an already awesome bag. I have the roll-aboard suiter, a small carry bag (can not remember the exact name), and a garment bag. The roll-aboard and the garment bags became my new luggage as a birthday gift. Actually one was a gift and the other I bought at the same time. The carry bag was a Christmas gift from my wife a while later. The birthday gift came from my parents.
With all that said, I will focus on the roll-aboard 22" suiter bag I like so much. This bag has served me well and will continue to serve me as I travel over the next few decades. The bag fits right up in the overhead compartments on most airlines. I usually am on Continental or an overseas operator flying large aircraft so the bag fits right in. Even on Continental's smallest planes, I have no problem getting the bag in the overhead bin. Northwest seems to have smaller compartments, but when I used them, I was headed to Asia and checked that bag so it was underneath. It even survived that trip!
I have taken this bag to Asia (several times), Europe, Africa, South America, and Australia. Of course, it has been all over the USA. In fact the first trip was to Alaska where it was subjected to the torture of America West and Delta Airlines. Also, it was carried on The Alaska Railroad where it was banged around quite a bit. Not even a scratch. The only wear was on the wheels that had been rolled across all kinds of surfaces. Even after all of my travels, the bag still looks like new. The lining is not torn, the outside is in tact. The material they used to make the bag is tough. It is made of some ballistic nylon, which is a technical term. I am very pleased with the bag.
The zippers and handles, there are two on my bag, have held up well. The rivets holding the handles onto the bag are still very snuggly fit together on the bag. The handles are not showing much wear. Besides, if these pieces fail, all I have to do is return the bag and Travel Pro will fix the problems at no charge to me, more on that later. The zippers run smoothly. The pull handles on the zippers are solid, but were changed to a more contoured design in the newer models. Either way they hold up well to punishing travel. The arm that slides out of the bag is made of aircraft aluminum or some other lightweight high strength metal. Anyhow, it works well. I have been known to pick my bag up by that extended handle without any bad results. (Not the right thing to do, but with such a well built bag no problem.)
The bag is capable of holding enough clothes for much travel around the USA and even weekends overseas, which I have done on more than one occasion. One can easily use the folding suit section to "hang" clothes and fold them neatly. This section then sits on top of the rest of the items in the bag. There are three accessory pockets, two on the front that are great for travel documents and books or small items.
One feature I really like about the Travel Pro bags is the piggyback feature on this bag. I can take the strap that comes with the bag and hook other bags onto this bag, thus making it easy to roll all of my bags. In my case, I am able to hook my dive gear bag to this bag and with one hand, I am able to pull all of my gear at once. The other travel pro bags, such as my carry bag and garment bag have built in straps that fit on the piggyback knob. Snap it all together and whip your way through the crowded airport.
I mentioned the warranty. Well, I had to try it out recently. Not on my own bag, but on my mother's bag. On a recent trip we borrowed her 26" rolling bag to help us travel with our new baby. Well, Continental's ground crew in Miami and/or Ft. Lauderdale decided that it would be fun to break off the zipper pulls. Continental treated me well, especially since I am a Gold Elite Onepass Member, and offered to pay for the repairs without any question. Well, Travel Pro covered the damage saying it was a warranty repair. Thus, Continental did not even have to shell out anything for this. To me, that speaks highly for Travel Pro, for they did not have to do the work and call it warranty repairs.
I give this bag a five (5) star rating. They are on the expensive end, but if you look for discounts and sales they are available. You do get what you spend the big bucks for, a truly exceptional bag.
