Pros: Well...It probably won't fall apart under normal riding conditions
Cons: Heavy, ugly, handles like fat sow.
The Bottom Line: If you want a fast, fun, reliable full suspension rig, look outside of Trek's walls.

| sammy_marvelle's Full Review: Trek VRX 300 (1999) |
It might be a little harsh to describe Trek's VRX debocal the worst suspension bike ever, but it's not far from it. Trek got into rear suspension way before they were ready, and instead of following the reliable, working designs that other companies were working hard to perfect, the good fella's at Trek decided to try to be innovators. Not a good idea, and the VRX is just another example.
Finally, they gave the Y bike the axe, and not a day too soon. But basically the VRX is a slightly modified, way heavier version of the same bike. But this time, instead of marketing to the cross-country super weenie, they shifted the focus to the weekend warrior free rider. Maybe one of the only good decisions Trek has made in their full suspension history.
Unfortunately, a good idea is not always followed by good execution. On many of the VRX's, you will notice sloppy welds, mainly on the underside of the frame, where they probably figured no one was ever going to look. Also, there are some very heavy and highly unnecessary gussets, to give the appearence of added strength, but not really contributing to the overall strength of the frame at all. Lastly, there is the decision to equip some models with a tripple crown fork, giving it a "moto" appearance, when the handling actually diminishes at higher speeds.
As far as the worst suspension bikes ever built, the VRX rates highly among them, but I feel I could compile a list of at least ten or so worse. My suggestion is to invest your pennies in one of Trek's fine hardtails until they get this full suspension mess straightened out.
