| xyzwyatt's Full Review: Tres Clean Hold Firm Control Gel Personal Care |
I have fine hair that easily becomes a straight frizz ball if I don't add gel after showering. I prefer to use gel over mousse because I normally air dry my hair. It takes a lot longer for my hair to air dry with this product in my hair, but a lot less time to style.
The product is marketed as a clean hold with firm control. Tresemme must have changed the formula rather than just renaming the product because it's not the same as it use to be. This product is a lot lighter in my hair than I remembered with other versions of Tressemme gels. When I first started using the product I wondered if I was using enough get because my hair always felt so light after applying the gel. My personal favorite reason for using this formula is how easy the gel washes off of my hands. In fact, I could just wipe my hands on a towel and walk away because it's not sticky at all. This could have something to do with the first ingredient being water.
TO APPLY To apply, squirt some in your hands, rub together and distribute through damp hair. Brush from roots to ends to ensure the product covers all of your hair. Allow to air dry. If you blow dry your hair, you're better off using mouse instead of gel. If I forget to put this on when my hair is wet then it's over. It's a disaster to put the gel on dry hair. Once the product dries, the hair can be fluffed with fingers. Once fluffed there's no wet appearance or crunchy strands. With previous gel, I was forced to use a comb to separate the strands and combing demolished the hold. My hair doesn't get oily as the day goes on either. STYLING After the product dries I can't even tell that this is in my hair. It's not sticky and it doesn't cause my hair to get greasy as the hours pass. The product definitely makes styling my hair faster. The curls hold immediately in my hair and the strands are smooth and shiny. The frizz is tamed. I can comb my hair when finished and not have to endure the static fly aways.
Since the gel is so light it doesn't really allow me to crunch and curl like I'm use to. This may be more suitable for those who want to stay with straight strands. It may also be great for people who have tight curls because the product doesn't need to be brushed after it dries.
The product doesn't really allow me to do much with my hair. I can't style my hair in a certain way or go curly like I can with an extra hold product.
BODY I like to use gel because this product will dry with some body. I also notice that my hair looks smooth with less flyaway strands than without the gel. The product claims to have 24 hour humidity resistance. I'll have to agree, the product does seem to work all day. This is not to be confused with a miracle product. Anyone can tell from my hair if it's raining outside...or if I'm due for a haircut. The product doesn't have a chance if you have damaged hair or you're already in need of a haircut. SMELL Tresemme is my favorite brand mostly because it has a mild fragrance. I don't like my styling products to have an overpowering scent because it bothers my nose all day. There is a very faint smell to this gel which I don't notice after it's applied. BOTTLE The gel comes in a tube and stands upright with the easy to open flip lid lid on the bottom. I prefer this formula because the gel is always ready to come out. Bottled gels tend to cling to the sides and require a lot of shaking to get it out. The tube is flexible enough to squeeze at different angles so I'm able to use every drop out of this container. Unfortunately, they changed the bottle from clear to black so now I can't see how much I have left. REMOVING One thing I don't look forward to is getting the product out of my hair in the shower. For some reason, the gel causes the shampoo to foam up quite a bit. It takes a little more time to get the shampoo out of my hair than it does when I don't use the gel. INGREDIENTS The product is alcohol-free so is safe to use on a regular basis. This is very important to me because alcohol dries my hair and causes the stands to lighten when the sun hits it. Water (Aqua); VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer; PVP; PPG-5-Ceteth-20; Triisopropanolamine; Oleth-20; Carbomer; DMDM Hydantoin; Sorbitol; Propylene Glycol; PEG-12 Dimethicone; Olealkonium Chloride; Tetrasodium EDTA; Panthenol; Gelatin/Keratin Amino Acids/Lysine Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride; Fragrance (Parfum); Ext. Violet 2 (CI 60730) OVERALL I don't think this gel has as much control as other gels, but it definitely doesn't dry crunchy. I like that it doesn't have a strong fragrance. I also prefer the downward container that it's in.
Initially I preferred the previous formula better and as I continued using it I didn't feel that it was the one for me. This product is great for a natural looking hairdo. If I were trying to style my hair in an unusual way, I'd probably need a different product. I have moved on to So Sleek Extra Hold, a more crunchy Tresemme version that can make and hold curls.
