| bops_mom's Full Review: Triaminic Cough and Runny Nose Liquid Cherry Flavo... |
For years I never really worried too much about whether I was giving my son something he didn't actually need. I mean, I'd usually buy a general children's cold medication for him if he was sick. Back then, pre asthma, if he was sick (which was very rare) he always had a fever or aches, congestion and a cough. However, when he was diagnosed with asthma things changed. All of a sudden he would get a bad cough and congestion without any fever or aches. He was at that point already on asthma medication and I certainly did not want to give him an all in one if he didn't need something for fever or aches - which is why I was glad to find Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose Cherry Flavor Liquid.
About the product
Packaged in a clear plastic bottle with "child proof" cap, the full size bottle holds 4 fl. Oz. of red, cherry flavored liquid. Depending upon where I purchase this product I pay between $4 and $7. The liquid smells like fake, icky, sweet cherry flavoring and it pretty runny. It comes with a handy-dandy dosage cup making Dr. Mom's job only slightly easier.
Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose Cherry Flavor Liquid is pseudoephedrine free, which may or may not be what you're looking for. The active ingredients in it are: Chlorpheniramine maleate (1 mg per teaspoon) and Dextromethorphan HBr (5 mg per teaspoon).
Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose is also available in a thin strip and in softchew formulas. We've tried them and Brandon hates them equally. I'm not quite sure why but I tend to stick the old fashioned liquid stuff.
The box states this product can help temporarily relieve the following symptoms: "sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose or throat, itchy, watery eyes due to hay fever and cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation."
There are warnings on the box and I would highly recommend you read them before you use this product or administer this product. Please also see the recommendations for dosages and be aware that just because it's available without a prescription does not mean it can't be harmful.
Our Experience with Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose
Pretty much these days if Brandon gets sick (which he does a few times a year) he'll get a cough and have congestion. He has allergies, too which really don't help things. Any time he has some congestion well... it kicks his asthma into overdrive. His main asthmatic symptom is a cough, not a wheeze, and that cough can get out of control making him downright miserable while you or I may just be irritated, he can't breathe.
As I said he is on asthma medication and through trail and error with the help of his pediatrician we've worked out a plan for him that really keeps things under control. In addition to prescribed medications we pull out Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose Cherry Flavor Liquid when he starts to get a head cold.
It's not a magic cure all by any means - but combined with his asthma medications Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose Cherry Flavor Liquid really seems to do the trick for Brandon. It helps with congestion and runny nose, and it helps with the cough. It doesn't dry him out to the point of cotton mouth (which is one reason I like to take chlorpheniramine maleate for allergies myself), yet it does dry him out enough so there isn't excessive congestion which in turn makes a huge different with the hacking and coughing. No doubt the cough suppressant does its fair share, too. After getting a dose I can generally expect Brandon to show improvement after 20 minutes or less. The directions say you can take it every 4-6 hours. I haven't found he needs it any sooner than that. It does last him a good 4 to 6 hours.
Basically....
Triaminic Cough & Runny Nose Cherry Flavor Liquid is a staple in our house. It works for Brandon and while he says it is nasty he takes it without too much fuss because he knows how much it helps him out. As a mom, I'm glad that there are products out there that aren't an all-in-one because sometimes your child doesn't need a little bit of everything to feel better.
