Two months ago at the end of the school year both my children got hit with bugs and infections that lasted two weeks or more. I made a few trips to the grocery store and drug store in search of products to aid in combating these symptoms we all were plagued with. On one trip I purchased the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ for $6.49, containing six cherry chest patches.
This is intended for use on children between the ages of two and twelve. The patch has a mentholated cherry scent. The ointment is on a breathable cloth patch. Each patch is individually packaged with the active ingredients consisting of 4.7% camphor and 2.5% menthol, both acting as cough suppressants. The expiration date is stamped on the box as well as each pouch. The listed date for mine is July 2003, so it seems they are good for one year.
The inactive ingredients are: acrylic ester, copolymer, aloe vera gel, eucalyptus oil, glycerin, karaya, proplyene glycol, purified water, wild cherry fragrance. These are printed on each pouch as well as directions, warnings and the phone number for questions. This makes the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ ideal for individual use when traveling with children on vacation.
The top of each pouch has a small tear to continue with opening and removing the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™. The two scents are either cherry or mentholated for cough. Back in December of 2000 there was a recall due to pouch seal failures, according to safety alerts: http://www.safetyalerts.com/recall/f/004/d056.htm. This seems to be rectified and I see no response not to purchase Triaminic® Vapor Patch™. This is applied to either the throat or chest on the child and more than one can be used at a time. Although with only six in a package placing two could be costly in the end.
I have four remaining in the box and used two on separate occasions on my seven-year old son. You can even use up to three patches a day along with other suppressant medicines. My son was taking the liquid medicine as well as antibiotics for swollen glands. The nights that he wore the nasal strips he did not wear the patch, as we did not want to over do it. The patch is a flesh colored tan where you just peal back the lining in one strip and apply to the desired area of the child with the cough.
The scent is a bit overpowering when you first rip open the package. While wearing the patch my son mentioned no discomfort and slept soundly both times. The first time I pulled off the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ in one easy swipe. The next time he wore it he was able to remove it himself with no complaints of irritation and no visible signs of a patch being on his chest. The pajamas my son was wearing were loose fitting and we placed the patch on before putting his top on. This should not be placed over broken or irritated skin and not on the face. The texture of the top part of the patch is not itchy, plus it is very thin.
The Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ is for external use and not to be ingested, placed in hot water, near flames or placed in a microwave. If the cough has continued for seven days, consult a Doctor and discontinue using. Also when a fever is present, a headache or rash appears check first with Physician. For children that have asthma, chronic breathing problems mention to the Doctor about this product before using.
I brought the box with me to our appointment and showed our Doctor all the medicines I had been giving my children. The Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ is relatively small measuring almost three inches by two and fits perfectly on a small child’s chest and/or throat. I decided to purchase this to test on my older son before attempting on my younger non-verbal son. Now that I have feedback from my older son I plan on placing a Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ on my younger one when the next cough due to cold arrives at our house.
This is a great alternative or to use in conjunction with other products on children to give them relief up to eight hours so they can sleep without the annoying cough keeping them up. The vapors soothe their noses and throats so they are refreshed in the morning. This should be stored at room temperature. For questions relating to the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™, call 1-800-452-0051. This is a good product to keep on hand for the next cold/flu season that brings a cough with it and for minor throat irritations. For children that have a hard time taking medicine this works well, although I would first stick with the Vicks VapoRub Cream as it is greaseless as well and cheaper in the long run.
***UPDATE *** March 2003
This past month both my children had viral infections that required purchasing another box of the Triaminic® Vapor Patch™. This time I chose the Menthol scent and was pleased with the aroma on this one over the cherry scented box. My youngest son had no problems with my placing the patch on his chest. You can use up to three patches in any 24-hour period. By the second patch there was a slight mark on the area once the patch had been removed. With a warm washcloth this was easy to clean.
The Triaminic® Vapor Patch™ works extremely well, allowing my children a peaceful night's rest with no middle of the night waking. Inside the box is also a dollar coupon for next purchase. The only problem I have found is that Rite Aid cannot stock these fast enough since they have been out for a few days and I need to restock my supply.
