A Good Piece of Gear
Written: Jun 3, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Tough, clear, accurate
Cons:Expensive
The Bottom Line: This is completely overbuilt for civilian use, but it's also completely awesome. If you're the type of guy who doesn't settle for anything but the best...
Disclaimer: I do not own the product in review.
Before being issued this optic along with my other gear, I’d thought the idea of spending this amount of money on an optic to be absolutely absurd. After using this for some time now, I’m tempted to spend the money on one myself (granted, it may be slightly overkill for non-combative shooting).
Operation
This optic uses strictly fiber optics for chevron illumination. I have seen these offered in multiple colors, but mine is red. The fiber optic system allows for no battery requirement in developing the light for the chevron. The fiber optic collector is positioned atop the weapon, and it functions very well, even in slightly lower light conditions. This is not suitable for shooting at night, as other pieces of gear are designed to satisfy those requirements.
Windage and elevation are adjusted through two screws on the side/top. These are covered with threaded fittings and dummy corded to the optic. After adjustments, it is necessary to knock the prism in order to set the new adjustments.
The chevron/statia system may not immediately make sense without some background knowledge. The width of the chevron represents the width of an average size enemy combatant at 100m, while positions within the chevron represent 100, 200 and 300m elevation targets, from top to bottom, respectively. Statia lines below the chevron can be used to conduct longer range shooting, with great ease of elevation adjustment.
Durability
This thing is insanely tough. The serial numbers on mine are nearly worn off from being beaten so badly. Corners have been rounded from constant abrasion. The lenses are scratched on either end, and the thing is in – what appears to be – pitiful condition. In spite of all of the massive abuse it’s undergone, my TA-31 is still providing accuracy and clarity beyond anything a cheaper optic is capable of producing.
There is one caveat: having a quality optic and quality optic mount does not absolve one of the responsibility of conducting a proper BZO for the optic to ensure that it’s holding zero. Also, do not invest in such a high quality optic without also investing in a quality optic mount. My TA-31 is mounted on a LaRue Tactical lever throw mount, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Ironically enough, these are more often damaged due to over adjustment during zeroing than in combat maneuver.
Accuracy Accuracy is excellent once zeroed. The statia lines and chevron system allow for very simple elevation adjustments and aid in range estimations. There are two things that really affect accuracy adversely:
1. Rain/humidity can quickly cloud the lenses. This is near impossible to mitigate.
2. Excessive light on the fiber optic collector causes the chevron to “bleed”. This can be mitigated through use of tape on the collector.
Other than those things, this thing is absolutely rock solid. The 4x magnification is tremendously useful for assessing targets and even bullet splash – two areas where traditional iron sights suffer.
Conclusion
The TA-31 is a fantastic piece of gear, providing accuracy, optical clarity and durability through the worst of conditions and physical punishment. The chevron/statia system is ideally suited for combat and assists tremendously in mitigating the effect of longer ranges. This was not at all designed for the civilian market, nor is it at all necessary for recreational shooters; but, you can rest assured that it’ll last you a life time if you purchase it.
