bigskeptic's Full Review: Tripett Green Beef Tripe Original Formula for Dogs...
A couple years ago, my husband and I read an article extolling the benefits of feeding dogs green beef tripe. We are lucky to have a whole food pet boutique nearby where I always shop. The owner is very knowledgeable, and after speaking with her I was convinced to give Tripett Green Beef Tripe a try.
What Is Tripe? For those like I was, unfamiliar with it, tripe is simply stomach tissue. Cleaned, steamed, tripe is typically available at the butchers and grocery stores. DO NOT feed this to your dog. It is difficult to digest (I don't think I could either. ick)
Green beef tripe is specifically the stomach lining of the cow's "fourth" stomach. This is where the actual digestion of the grasses and grains the cow has ingested takes place. It is the raw stomach tissue that still contains the undigested and semi-digested grasses and grains. This partially digested matter plus the naturally occurring enzymes, and bacteria and other nutrients provide enormous health benefits to your dog.
There are many breeders and owners who actually feed green tripe exclusively. They claim that benefits include improved temperment and vitality. Additionally, dogs with chronic allergies or gastro-intestinal issues typically improve.
Our Experience We have an elderly Golden Retriever, Buddy, who has chronic allergies. At the time of reading the article, we had tried just about every grain-free kibble available. Also, at this time we were the proud owners of a geriatric American Staffordshire Terrier ("pit bull") developing some arthritis and occassional gastric trouble. I had just started switching them over to frozen raw diet.
My dogs definitely were excited, and still are, when I opened the can of Tripett. While the oder may be offensive to humans, this is something dogs definitely want to sink their teeth into.
The most noticeable improvement was with the pit bull. In combination with the new raw food, we began to see improvements in under a month. She was no longer occassionally throwing up meals. I also noticed she'd lost quite a bit of weight. She was not overweight to begin with so I was concerned at first. But then I realized she was not getting stiff and sore and night, and also had more energy. After a couple months, her weight stabalized and was maintained until the end of her days. She, unfortunately passed about a year and a half later, at the age of 14. But we are completely convinced that the change in diet extended her life.
As far as our Golden goes, he still has allergy issues. We now believe they are completely environmental. However, I am proud to report he is a healthy and active 11.5 years old now. He is still willing and able to run and jump after tennis balls without any regrets later in the evening. And I can't remember the last time he had any tummy issues.
We are true believers in the benefits of adding green beef tripe to dog diets. I now buy them by the 12-can case. I have not seen Tripett in major pet retailers. Luckily, my nearby pet whole food retailer will order them for me and save me shipping. But you can also get it online.
Warning: green tripe stinks. I have tried another brand of canned but found the smell even worse probably due to the greater amount of water content. I personally don't have a problem feeding the Tripett at all. And if it is carefully covered, there is no problem in my fridge either. The only issue I have is that it must be disposed in the nightly trash versus recycling. Even rinsing the can doesn't get rid of everthing and then of course it would cause a great stink while we waited for recycling day.
