Working my way through dental products for my little 6 lb Chihuahua has been enlightening. I've tried different toothbrushes and toothpastes. Originally we were using a chicken flavored toothpaste. This toothpaste had him looking forward to getting his teeth brushed but when I went looking for more it was no longer available. Tooth care is a big money maker now a days.

When I was growing up with dogs no one even though about brushing a dog's teeth. It was hard enough to get a kid to brush their own teeth. Parents had other priorities. Now, the local vet offers tooth cleaning under anesthesia for a hefty sum of $300. This does not include any possible extractions.
This is one reason I've been doing at home care. I've tried the Triple Pet toothbrush and Triple Pet toothpaste. The toothpaste has tartar control and is mint flavored.
If you are working on toothcare for your pet you know there is a relationship between gum disease and heart condition. Tartar is an enemy and clean smelling breath is important.
If you are just starting out it may take some time for your dog to let you proceed without a fuss. Introduce it on your finger at first if you can. That's why I liked the chicken flavored tooth paste. They had no issues with that. I could do whatever I wanted to their teeth as long as chicken was involved but that is no longer available.
It's best to start pets young when introducing this procedure. My dogs were rescue so that wasn't an option. One of my dogs has great breath and no tartar. The other, the smaller Chi has iffy breath and bad looking tartar accumulation. I also noticed his tongue was hanging out a lot. He'd lost several teeth. So brushing is on the calendar every day now.
You squeeze a small amount of the toothpaste on the brush of your choice. I tried the Triple brush and am now using a Soft Pulsar vibrating brush. I'm very pleased with this since the vibration does a quick job with less work on my part, or less struggle on the dog's part.
Once your dog has been introduced to the toothpaste you can apply it to your tooth brush or a rubber finger cot /finger brush available in any pet store and get to work. It's suggested you hold your pet's mouth open and gently brush their gums and teeth with short back and forth strokes. This is where the vibrating brush comes in handy. It strokes for you. Make sure you massage along the gum line. Rinse your brush after each use. I run mine under Instant Hot water to sanitize it. You can put a regular dog toothbrush in the dishwasher now and then. With the vibrating brush I run it under INstant Hot to make sure it is nice and clean.
Triple Pet also offers All Natural Breath Freshener with Parsley Oil * Lysine in a sugar free toothpaste. It's all organic.Triple Pet is all natural and will not foam so you needn't rinse. It uses stevia as a sweetener.
