I have been a frequent Tropix customer for the past 6 or more years and, by far, they have the best fried calamari in the Bay Area. I've traveled long distances to try fried calamari recommended by friends, but have failed to find anything that compares with the crisp, tender morsels that Tropix offers.
Prices average $11.00 to $18.00 for dinner entrees, with lunch prices from from $7.00 to $11.00. Appetizer prices range from $3.75 to $8.00.
Appetizers include soups that are very skillfully prepared with lots of chunky vegetables, crab cakes, fried plantains, saltcod and potato croquettes, grilled vegetables and, of course, the fried calamari. Appetizers served in baskets (red fries, calamari, plantains) come in generous portions. Accompanying dipping sauces are awesome.
I recommend any of the "jerk" meat choices on the menu. They're all very flavorful, juicy and perfectly spiced (including the jerk salmon). The curries are wonderful, especially the eggplant and mushroom curry. I recently had the jerk salmon with mashed sweets (sweet potatoes) and sauteed greens. The whipped sweets were the best I've ever tasted and I think the mango buerre blanc sauce had something to do with it!! Phenomenal!
For dessert, you must try the featured bread pudding. I think the choice changes daily or weekly. I had the blueberry bread pudding that arrived moist and warm with hand-whipped cream melting down the sides....mmmmmm!
