Last year, my tiller died. We had a funeral and then went to our local Lowe’s store and looked around for a new one.
Note: I have a garden on my parent’s land in my hometown.
After looking around for a while, my father and I decided on the Troy-Bilt Super Bronco tiller. We bought it together because we would both be using it on our gardens.
Why did we choose this tiller, you ask? Well, it actually was pretty easy to decide on. Here are a few of the things that we liked about this model:
1. 16” tilling width. Since we have a little extra land, we spread our gardens out a bit. In other words, we didn’t crown the rows in. This 16” tilling width allowed us to get the entire row without have to go over it more than once.
2. 10” tines. I like big tines on a garden tiller. The tines on this tiller adjust from 1” deep to 6” deep. This allows me to hit the top or go up to 6” deep. I typically go over the garden fairly shallow the first time through each spring. Then I go back over it deeper.
3. Self-propelled wheels. The self-propelled wheels are much easier to use than a tiller that isn’t self-propelled. Have you ever used a tiller that isn’t self-propelled? You don’t want to. It is well worth the extra money to get one that is self-propelled.
4. Cast iron transmission. A cast iron transmission is a great plus for this tiller. This will not rust easily and will typically last a lot longer.
These were the major options that I really like in this tiller. There are just a few things that I did not like about this tiller. They include:
1. 2 year warranty on the engine. I would really like to have more than a two year warranty on the engine. For what we spent, this tiller better last longer than two years!
2. 1 speed both ways. This tiller has only one speed for forward and one speed for reverse. Another speed would come in handy for different types of garden and different types of soil.
3. The price is a bit high. We could have spent quite a bit less than $700, but we wanted a good tiller that we felt would last.
In summary, we have had a good experience with this tiller. I would recommend it to anyone who has a typical garden. This is not a tiller to be used to very large gardens. It is very easy to use and has a lot of great options.
