Trebor1415's Full Review: Tru TG131HT Tritium Fiber Optic Sight H&K Usp Mode...
For defensive pistol shooting, being able to see your sights is critical to making accurate shots. Since FBI statistics indicate that most defensive shootings occur in low light conditions, the sights need to be visible in all lighting conditions, day or night.
The standard solution for low-light defensive shooting is to install a set of so-called "Night sights" on the pistol. These sights use a vial of radioactive Tritium to give off a yellow-green glow. This works well in low light, but does not offer any advantages during the day.
For day-time shooting, one of the most highly visible sights are the fiber optic sights developed for competitive "action pistol" events. These sights use small lengths of fiber optic cables to gather and refocus the available light. All the shooter needs to do is place the resulting large glowing dot on the target and pull the trigger smoothly. Unfortunately, fiber optic sights, while great during the day, don't offer any advantages at night or any time there is not enough ambient light to gather. In those situations, night sights perform better.
This is where the Tru Glo Tritium Fiber Optic Sight comes in. Tru Glo has developed a replacement sight set that incorporates both a fiber optic sight and a Tritium vial in the same set of sights. This is designed to be THE solution for all defensive shooting needs, day or night, good light or low light.
These sights are available as aftermarket additions for a variety of common defensive handguns. While the only specific sight in the Epinions database is made for the H&K USP models, all the sights are essentially similar with the exception of the dovetail set up.
I have a set of these sights I installed on my Sig 239 9mm pistol. When I received the sights I was impressed by their construction. One of the criticisms of fiber optic sights has been that, while they are fine for competition, they are too fragile to use in defensive use. The fiber optic tubes were known to come loose and fall off the sight base, necessity replacement.
Tru Glo seems to have fixed this problem. I've had the sights on my pistol for over a year and the fiber optics show no sign of coming loose. During that time I've used the pistol in several advanced training courses and loaned it to numerous students. The sights have stayed put throughout countless draws and presentations and under the recoil of thousands of 9mm rounds.
I've found the sights to work well in both good light and bad. During the day they present a bright green front sight that is easy to see and place on the target. I've had many students, both newbies and experienced shooters, comment on how easy the sights are to see and use.
In dim light the Tritium gives off its glow, which is picked up and magnified slightly by the fiber optics. I've found that Tru Glo sights are a little less bright in low light then other night sights that have only Tritium and no fiber optic. I believe this is due to slightly smaller Tritium vials being used to leave room for the fiber optics.
Make no mistake though, the sights work fine in low light, they just don't glow quite as bright as a Tritium only unit. Considering that these sights are still so easy to see in both good light or bad, I have no problem giving up a little bit of "absolute" glow.
The only downside of the mixed Tritium/Fiber Optic unit is the price. Expect to pay close to $100 for a mixed set, compared to about $60 for one of Tru Glo's fiber optic only sight. And, unless you have the tools and skills you need to install them yourself, you will need to pay a gunsmith to install the sights. That adds to the cost.
For defensive pistol shooting the advantages are worth it though. I have these sights installed in one pistol and plan to add them to other pistols as money allows. They do make that much of a difference. If you are fighting for your life, you need to be able to make your shots, and these sights would help you do that.
