Pros:Intelligent, clever, and sexy; with vampires, werewolves, and scarier things.

Cons:Only twelve episodes a season.  I can't wait another year!

The Bottom Line:

Hands down, the entertainment value of the year.  Southern fried vampires with a big pitcher of Lust spiked TRUE BLOOD.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

True Blood: Season 2 (2009) From the novels of Charlene Harris

Eric Northman: Perhaps I'll grow on you.
Sookie Stackhouse: I'd prefer cancer.

Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) telepathic barmaid in Bon Temps, LA, has an interesting life.  She reads minds, her boyfriend is a vampire, her boss is a shape shifter, and her brother is an idiot.

This season, there is a serial killer in the area of Bon Temps again, as the body of a woman is left in Andy Bellefluer's (Chris Bauer) car, her heart ripped out.  The corpse belongs to Miss Jeanette (Aisha Hinds) the conjure woman who in theory exorcized Tara and her Momma of their demons.  Further, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), Tara's cousin has disappeared.  When you run a gay porn site, and deal V (Vampire Blood) you can expect consequences.  And there is a woman from Sam Merlotte's past.  Mary Ann (Michelle Forbes) is not a natural woman.  She is however very kind to Tara, taking her in after her mother kicked her out.  But what is her motivation, and why does Sam fear her so?

To complicate matters, Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) has joined the Light of the Sun Ministries, a fundamentalist, rabidly anti-vampire church, built along the same lines as a little place down in Waco.

Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) has problems of his own.  He has killed a vampire to save Sookie.  He has to make a new one to replace that unlife lost.  His spawn, Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll) is sullen, alienated, overly dramatic, in other words, a 17 year old girl.  Becoming a vampire only heightens these personality traits.

And when Sookie is attacked by a bull headed monster in the woods, the poison is killing her.  To save her, Bill finds himself in the unenviable position of placing himself in the debt of Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård), the Sheriff of Louisiana.  Eric makes no secret of his interest in Sookie, and when Sookie discovers that Lafayette is alive, but far from well in Eric's basement, she incurs a further debt to save his life.

Now Bill and Sookie have to fly to Dallas to discover what has happened to Godric (Allan Hyde), Eric's maker, a vampire over two thousand years old.  So while the Stackhouse siblings are headed on a collision course in the Vampire/Church war, Bon Temps is going to hell in a hand-basket as the town loses it's collective mind, (not to mention it's collective inhibitions, and collective pants) as a contagious madness sweeps the parish.  Can Sookie and Bill save those close to them, or are they destined to be torn apart (possibly literally in the Bacchanalia that is Bon Temps?)

Part of this shows success is the multitudinous themes that weave through the tale; while Sookie may be the main character, she is not the star.  Even minor characters get their fair shot at development.  Case in point, Jason's friend on the road crew, Hoyt Fortenberry (Jim Parrack).  We always knew he was a bit of a momma's boy, but when Hoyt starts dating newly minted Vampiress Jessica, his story is thrust to the fore, not only his relationship with the highly old fashioned and disapproving Bill Compton, but his codependent relationship with his domineering mother, Maxine (Dale Raoul). Even flavor text characters like Jane Bodehouse (Patricia Bethune) are nurtured into more sympathetic roles.

Part of the joy of these books is Charlaine Harris' deep understanding of the social dynamics of the Deep South.  I don't think you can fully appreciate the genius of how they captured the backwoods feel unless you have lived in this part of the world (Charlaine lives about thirty five miles from my house). The theme music and opening credits display, admirably, what the show is about; while Jace Everett sings, "I wanna do real bad things with you..." you see the fecundity of the bayou country interspersed with the competing and complimentary force of rot.  The erotic abandon of the Juke joint is mirrored by the ecstatic abandon of the church house, and life, death, bigotry and passion all dance hand in hand.

Another part of the joy is watching the most excellent cast breathe life into these characters.  These are really great professionals, from Oscar winner Anna Paquin to 2nd generational Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård.  The entire Ensemble won the Satellite Award for best Television Ensemble.  They earned it.

Lastly, and most importantly, is they never lose sight of what this series is all about; thrills and chills.  And these they deliver in abundance.  For the thrills, we have Anna Paquin and Steven Moyer in compromising positions (and many other combinations, including John Billingsley and Patricia Bethune), Sam Trammel frequently naked because his clothes don't shift with him, and Ryan Kwanten also frequently naked, because he is a slut. For chills, they have vampires, drug dealers, shape shifters, Conjure women, and darker, scarier things indeed, with more waiting in the wings.  This is why this is one of my favorite series on the air today.  Check it out.
