Pros:Convenient, inexpensive, tastes like the real thing!
Cons:They don't make True Chocolate. Other than that... None!
The Bottom Line: What a great product! It's convenient and it tastes great!
My husband is a real sourpuss! As for me, I like lemon flavoring in a few foods and drinks, but my husband really enjoys lemon, and uses it a lot.
But sometimes, it's just not practical to use fresh lemons or even the bottles of lemon juice. So we were happy to discover True Lemon.
This product is lemon juice, in a crystallized form. The crystals come in little packets. The packets claim to contain the lemon equivalent of "1 large wedge". We actually find that a bit of an understatement. These crystals are very strong!
The packets are very small - about the size of a sugar substitute packet. 40 come in a box. The boxes are sold individually in my grocery store, but warehouse clubs sell the boxes in bulk. An individual box costs around $3.
So how do you use the crystals? Well, you simply add them to your food and drink, whenever you want some lemon flavor. The most obvious place to use this product is in your tea. Even adding the crystals to iced tea is no problem; they dissolve easily. They can also be added to colas, or even just ice water, to make lemonade. As I said above, this product is strong. One packet can easily be split among three cups of tea. The taste is genuine lemon. I dare say you wouldn't be able to tell that this product was used, versus the real thing.
Another use is on food. Sprinkle on fish, veggies, chicken, etc. You can also use it in sauces. It works just as well as using a few drops of real lemon juice.
So what is this magic crystal? The ingredients are citric acid, lactose, lemon juice, lemon oil, maltodextrin, and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). The nutrition content is all 0's down the line. 0 calories, 0 fat, 0 sodium. I'm sure if you use enough packets you'll eventually work your way up to a couple calories, but used normally, you're not sabotaging your diet at all, by using this product. And, it's nice to see that each packet contains 25% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C.
This is a convenient product, one that we enjoy using, especially when we travel. For long car rides, it's nice to be able to drop a few crystals into a bottle of soda, or water, and enjoy a refreshing lemony beverage. It's inexpensive, doesn't add any fat or calories, and tastes like the real thing. Basically, this product just does what it's intended to do. It's a definite winner in my household.
See www.trulemon.com for additional information as well as recipes. While I haven't tried them, they also make True Lime and True Orange. I'm holding out for True Chocolate.
