| natemes's Full Review: True Temper Lawn Shark Serrated Edger |
This review, like many of mine, is a bit long. It often seems useful to me to give a bit of backstory so the product is seen in context.
We've started doing a lot of lawn work this year. We wanted the place in really nice shape for a big party and have put in a lot of time. We've planted some trees, added a few nice large rocks, and created a number of flower beds.
Those lovely flower beds will eventually bring us to the Lawn Shark edger, but first a little on edging. We don't care for the look of little white fences or that black plastic lawn edging stuff. We wanted to be able to mow right of to the edge of the bed and didn't want it to look to artificial. Our friend is an experienced landscaper and said to create V-shaped troughs around the beds and then fill them in with the same mulch we spread over the bed area. The result is a nice line between the bed and the grass, a flat border that can be mowed right up to, and, if you go below the level of the grass with the small trough, the grass doesn't grow into the bed. But, how do you get a nice little trough.
Off to Home Depot to buy an edger. Most edgers are half-moon shaped devices on a long handle. You step on the top of the shovel-like blade and it cuts down into the lawn theoretically making a neat edge. I saw several of this type and the Ames Lawn Shark. I like to try new things so I bought one of each and would return the less useful one.
The half-moon style works OK but seems to mostly push the grass down instead of making a neat cut--not very impressive. The Lawn Shark however is used more like a saw and cuts relatively easily through the turf--one cut vertically and another at a 45 angle creates a little wedge that can be easily removed and is ready for packing with mulch. The Shark's blade makes the process pretty easy. It also readily cuts through any roots that you find along the way.
I've only used it a few times (I'm now on the bench waiting for a back injury to heal) I will update the review when I've had a bit more experience with the shark. Still, from my limited time it seems a very useful tool that makes edging a neatly defined bed relatively quick and easy.
