I have always loved Chocolate Truffles. To me they are much more sinfully delicious than a plain chocolate candy. Good truffles are soft, coated with a dusting of cocoa powder, and have that wonderful melt-in-your-mouth quality. For me, Godiva truffles were the closest to perfection here in the US and I had no qualms paying the steep price for them. But a few years back I discovered Truffettes de France at Cost Plus World Market. Wow! These little chocolate morsels are wickedly delicious and a whole lot cheaper.

Truffettes de France are pure chocolate with a light dusting of cocoa powder. Unlike some truffles, they don't contain any filling, but with their rich luscious taste, it's not really needed. They have a shape that is similar to a Hershey's Kiss and are slightly smaller than your typical truffle sold in a chocolate shop such as Godiva. However, the beauty of this is that they're very easy to pop in your mouth. And chances are, you'll want to have at least two because one simply won't satisfy you.

For the unindoctrinated truffle connoisseur, truffles are traditionally made with ganache, which is simply a mixture of chocolate and cream, and coated with cocoa powder. Here in the US a lot of the so-called truffles sold in various stores are really a far cry from what a proper truffle should be. But Truffettes de France, although obviously not hand-made and made with ingredients that ensure a good shelf life, are the closest to the real thing that I have found.

A few months ago I purchased an enormously huge package of Truffettes de France at Costco, two 2-lb. boxes sold together for under $20. It was quite a deal. Within each box are two foil-wrapped packages of truffles. According to the package each box has about 24 servings. Well, a serving is considered 5 truffles, or 240 calories and 20 g of fat (16 saturated). Obviously, this is not a dieter's food. Two truffles is more appropriate for me.

Since I got so many of them, I store the extra box in the freezer. But when eating these little sinful treats, make sure they are at room temperature. You'll want to experience their rich, buttery chocolate flavor as its melts in your mouth! They're especially good with a nice glass of red wine. Then go for a walk around the block so it doesn't land on your hips or waist. Bon appetite!
