Pros: Bright day or night, durable
Cons: Short warranty
I am writing this review as a police officer who has on many occasions been able to try and test different piece of equipment during the course of my duty. Recently I switched handguns (same make and model, just new), as I do every few years, and at the recommendation of a co-worker, opted for the TruGlo TFO sights.
My first impression was how much brighter these are than standard Tritium night sights. This is partially due to it not only have Tritium capsules but also bright green fiber optic rods. The top of these are exposed to gather any small amount of ambient light and amplify it. I suspect this will come in especially handy as the sights age and the Tritium they contain begin to dim. For those of you not familiar, Tritium is a mildly radioactive material that naturally glows without batteries or needing light to be charged. It is all contained inside a glass container to prevent any type of health hazard.
These were installed by the dealer I purchased the firearm from, and have not shifted or drifted at all, which is a testament not only to how they were installed but also to their construction as the fit snuggly in place.
These sights present a bright green sight picture to the rear, a standard 3 dot system is used. They provide an excellent transition between all light conditions, day and night. Due to the construction of these, they are not visible to the target, and are only visible from behind the firearm.
The construction of these sights is larger than most Tritium sights, and this is due to the fiber optic rods, but due to the design of this system, they are snag-resistant and fit all standard and tactical holsters without worry.
I can not speak to the long term durability of this sight as I have only been using these for about 9 months, however they still glow just as bright as the day I got them. Typically other brands of Tritium sights last for 10 to 12 years, and are warranted as such. TruGlo only offers a 90 day warranty on their products. This has made me wonder how long these will actually last. Thus far I have not seen any indications of failure, defects or other problems.
Although I am still waiting to see the long term durability of this sighting system, what I have seen so far with this is nothing less than impressive. As an officer I would recommend this product to my other co-workers. I have recommended this to a new recruit who has purchased it and is also very pleased an impressed.
