Recently I purchased a home model meat grinder(see my review on this product) because I was tired of buying supermarket ground meat where they throw all of their waste meat into the grinder and sell it as hamburger. Before this, I started to pick out beef from the meat case and ask the butcher to grind it for me, thinking that I would get only the meat I gave him as ground meat. Not so. Because their grinding machine would still have remnants of the "garbage" beef they had been grinding, I would get this in my meat too.
So....I bought a grinder and now I could buy my own beef, trim it myself, cut it up and grind it myself in my own spotlessly clean grinder, adding just the right amount of fat depending on what I wanted to use the beef for. My little home "butcher shop" was operating wonderfully and the meat I was producing was being praised by all family members for it's freshness, fat content, and lack of gristle, bone pieces, nerve and all that other "good" stuff your supermarket butcher adds in.
But then I realized another little problem when grinding your own.......making patties. It was time consuming and messy to shape the burgers and get them wrapped for the freezer. So I figured I needed a hamburger press and thus the quest to find a good one.
I bought a metal one (cast aluminum) that was very sturdy to use but not very efficient. The meat would stick to the metal and was very hard to get the patty out in one piece.
I tried a hard plastic one, but this did not work much better because it was very stiff and easy to break if not careful. I tried a knock-off of a Tupperware sample, but alas, this too found it's way in to the waste pail. It was too soft & flexible and wouldn't make a well formed patty (unless you were using Play Dough).
Finally I purchased this hamburger press from Tupperware and I am very, very pleased with it. It is easy to use, makes great patties in any thickness you desire, releases the patty with no difficulty and is a cinch to clean. AND..it was the least expensive of all the presses I purchased.
It is white with a black handle, measures approx. 6" x 3-1/2" high to top of handle. There are 3 pieces to the set..a keeper, a ring and a press with handle. Makes burgers of 4-1/2" diameter with thickness up to 1-1/2". Dishwasher safe on top rack. Comes with instruction pamphlet. Cost approx. $10. Also available are self-stacking plastic keepers from Tupperware to freeze burgers in containers as they are made. The press and the keepers are available from Tupperware or on eBay from many sellers. The part numbers are 1925-4, 1927-1 and 1926-2.
I recommend to everyone to consider grinding your own meat and purchasing this great little kitchen helper to assist you in forming the neatest hamburger patties you ever saw.
A warning to all you garage sale shoppers in my neighborhood......there will be a large assortment of used hamburger presses at my next sale!
