The only all natural disposable diaper!

Written: Jul 21 '00
Pros:no gel, chemicals or perfumes, all natural, cloth-like
Cons:can be hard to find in stores

The disposable diaper brand of choice in our household is Tushies. There are so many reasons why I love these diapers that it's hard to know where to begin.

First off, let me say that my daughter was almost exclusively cloth diapered for the first five months of her life. At that time, she started developing a rash due to the laundering process at the diaper service. Our diaper service also delivers Tushies at a discounted price. We'd been using these for her during outings and overnight sometimes. So we decided to go ahead and just use Tushies exclusively after the cloth weren't working out. (I readily admit that I'm too lazy to wash my own cloth diapers, but we will try the cloth service again in a few months to see if she still has a problem.) Next to cloth, I feel that Tushies is the next best thing.

Tushies are cloth-like in feel and fastened with tape. The tape holds well without being difficult to remove. It is possible to open the tape to check the diaper, and close back up. The elastic legs fit snugly but without leaving red marks, which some other brands do. We have also never seen any skin irritation around the waist of the diaper unlike Huggies, which always made her breakout across her belly.

Tushies is the only disposable diaper with natural cotton blend absorbency. Most of the regular brands of disposable diapers add so many chemicals to aid in absorption. The main one that concerns me is acrylic acid polymer salts otherwise known as "gel". These salt granules turn into gel when they come in contact with urine. I really despise these little balls of gel that get stuck to my baby's butt. I have tried a few mainstream brands such as Pampers (they were a gift) and Huggies. All of them leave those small sticky balls of gel. Not only are they difficult to wipe off, but I don't like the idea of my baby's tender skin coming in contact with chemicals and perfumes. Many of the mainstream diapers have given her a rash because of this. She has never gotten rashes from Tushies, although we've had problems with certain brands of baby wipes which is a topic for another epinion.

To make up for the fact they don't use gel, Tushies has extra thick layers of cotton blend and wood pulp fluff. Tushies are a bit thicker than some of the mainstream brands, such as Huggies Ultra Trim. However, the extra padding doesn't bother me or my baby. In fact, she is just learning to walk and probably finds it handy when she lands on her tushie! These diapers are amazingly absorbent despite the fact they are all natural. I've never had problems with leaks, not even overnight.

Tushies cost a little more than some brands, but not significantly so. Anyway, I don't mind paying a bit more for a chemical and gel free cloth-like diaper such as Tushies.

I order Tushies from a local diaper service who delivers them to my front door. However, I have seen Tushies at local natural foods stores such as Whole Foods and Alfalfa's. They are also available via their website at www.tushies.com.
