cusnwalter's Full Review: Solomon Northup - Twelve Years a Slave Books
Recently I read 12 years a slave for my history class in college. Out of the entire books I have read this year, this is one of my favorites.
what is this book about
This book is written by Solomon Northup. Northup was born a free man. He lived in New York with his family and did odd and end jobs. He was always looking for some kind of job in the winter since there was not any farming to be done. This brought him into trouble. He was captured and sold as a slave! No one knew what happened to him or where he went nor could he tell anyway that he was a freeman or he would be killed. He was forced to be a slave for 12 years. Gradually he gained trust from his masters and became very popular. Because of his friendliness and determination he was able to make the best of his life while a slave.
Northup talks about in the book how all this happened. The majority of the book takes place when Northup was enslaved. He talks about his different masters and how he got along with him. He tells you different stories about his 12 years, how he became so popular, and about his friends.
why I liked the book and why you should read it too!!
I liked this book because it is a true-life story. Northup went through everything that he told. It is a great piece of our history; most people do not realize that slaves came not only from other countries but our own. I was not taught this in high school and really thought that I should have been. This is why I think people who like or do not like history should read this. It makes learning history fun since it is not a textbook. You get to learn first hand and in detail what it was like to be a slave and have your life taken away from you.
