Hair Loss can be frightening. In men, baldness has been accepted as a distinguishing feature for some time now, but for women the advent of hair loss can be particularly devastating. It is not that I am trying to diminish the effect of hair loss in men, but they at least have the option of going with the flow of nature.
When I found that I was losing my hair a couple of years ago, I did not panic at first. I had just stopped taking birth control pills to give my body a break from the hormones, and that is when the hair loss started. I thought that after a few months my body would get used to not having the extra hormones, and that my hair loss would stabilize.
After waiting it out for about six months, the hair loss continued with a vengeance. Since I had very thick hair to begin with, my hair loss was not very apparent, and doctors diminished my problems.
And that is when I realized that I had to take charge of my own health.
I hit the books, and the Internet, and read everything there was to read about hair loss. Eventually I did go back to taking birth control pills, and the situation improved somewhat. I was very stressed at that time due to certain circumstances, and was also suffering from insomnia. Even though hormones played a major role in starting my hair loss, stress was probably playing an even bigger role in exacerbating the problem.
I continued to research on the subject, and further found out that many different supplements played a major role in hair health. That was when I also started taking various supplements, in addition to eating healthy by including more protein in the diet, and exercising everyday.
Inositol and Choline
I have known about the role of B vitamins for sometime now, and have been taking a B complex supplement for quite sometime now. But I had not heard anything about the lesser known B vitamins like Biotin, Inositol, and Choline.
Inositol and Choline work together synergistically, and are responsible for the formation of lecithin in the body. In a book called Hair loss prevention, by Ken Peters and David Stuss the authors reveal that, Inositol, another part of the Vitamin B complex is a cell membrane stabilizer, and an antioxidant that has a protective affect on the hair follicles, perhaps by shielding them from membrane damage caused by oxidized cholesterol in the scalp.
The authors further add that hair loss, insomnia, eczema, constipation, and eye abnormalities can be a sign of Inositol deficiency. Owing to its mild sedative effects it can help with insomnia and mild hypertension. In addition, it can also help in supporting firm and supple skin, body form, and diminish cellulite. Various sources cite that this vitamin helps to reduce the plaque on the arteries, and further enhances the absorption of Vitamin E.
TwinLab Choline and Inositol
Twinlab is a company that I trust, and take various supplements made by them. Heres some information about the TwinLab Choline and Inositol
Amount per Capsule:
Choline (from choline bitartrate) - 250 mg
Inositol - 250 mg
Each bottle of TwinLab Choline and Inositol contains the 500 mg of the ingredients in pure crystalline yeast free form, and contains 100 caplets each.
Other Ingredients: Gelatin, Cellulose, Purified Water, Magnesium Stearate, MCT, Silica
In addition, they state that the supplement is, Well tolerated by most highly allergic individuals. No tablet binders, coatings or colorings. Free of the most common allergens such as corn, soy, yeast, rice, barley, wheat, lactose (milk sugar) and all milk, citrus, fish, and egg products. No added flavorings, sugars, salt, artificial sweeteners, colorings,
preservatives or salicylates.
I take 1 caplet of the Twinlab Choline and Inositol everyday, with a B complex supplement to aid their absorption. I take this supplement at night due to its sedating effect.
Final Note
My hair loss has stopped, and I am excited about all the new re-growth I am having. Even though, I cannot completely attribute this success to Twinlab Choline and Inositol alone, because I take so many other supplements, I am convinced that it has played an important role in the cessation of my hair loss. In addition, it has helped me sleep better.
