An ex-neighbor and continuing friend of ours used to collect Beanie Babies and gave some to my mom. My mom was born and raised in Belgium, a country with a monarchy, and she was interested in all things royal, including the British royal family. When her friend offered her this Beanie Baby, released in honor of Princess Diana, my mom accepted it gladly.

This bear is a Beanie Baby, rather than the larger, less numerous Beanie Buddies that are out there. As a Beanie Baby, this stuffed, plush toy is about six or seven inches tall. As befits a princess, the bear is a deep, royal purple in color, and the fur is short, soft, silky, and quite shiny. It also has a purple bow around its neck and a white rose on the left side of the chest. It was released on 10/29/97 and retired on 4/13/99.
This bear comes in a plastic cube and, like any Beanie Buddy or Beanie Baby, there is a tag in its ear with a heart-shaped thick paper description of the bear. It includes no birthday, which is unusual for any Beanie product. Like others, though, there is a short poem inside the tag. It says:
“Like an angel, she came
from heaven above
She shared her compassion,
her pain, her love
She only stayed with us long
enough to teach
The world to share,
to give, to reach.”
I read that two types of pellets or beans were used to fill these bears: PE or PVC pellets, with the PVC pellets supposedly superior. I do not know what kind of pellets fill my mom’s bear.
Purple has always been one of my favorite colors. The Princess bear, whether it is the Baby or the Buddy size, has a rich, dark purple-blue hue. The little black eyes and nose definitely make it a cute bear. The fabric seems to be of good quality, and the stitching is done well. The “fur” feels very soft and velvety, and the bear is nice to hold, with a pleasant feel in your hands.
