| Mom2TyZick's Full Review: Tylenol Extra Strength Pain Reliever Fever Reducer... |
Before I had a successful back surgery last November, I'd all but given up on having another baby because of a chronic disc problem that caused me to take medication daily. After the surgery, the doctor gave me Oxycontin to ease the pain during my recovery. Finally, after a year, I feel my body is in good enough shape to bear another pregnancy, but some days I still have a lot of pain so I asked my doctor, "If I am pregnant and in pain, is there anything I can safely take?" The answer was "Tylenol."
Safety
One good, and bad thing about Tylenol is how the cap is designed. It is childproof, but is not child impossible. You must line up the arrows on the cap and the bottle and then simply pop the top, as Allen Jackson would say. This is good for seniors who don't have much strength in their hands, but bad for parents. Your child may get lucky and line the arrows up and before you know it, off comes the top. Sound impossible? After grabbing two caplets, I put the top back on then looked to see where it was, and guess what? Lined up perfectly. If you have young children in your home, make it a point to see how your top is positioned before putting in the cabinet.
Dosage
Each caplet contains 500 mg of acetaminophen. Adults and children over the age of 12 are advised to take 2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. The directions say to never take more than 8 tablets in a 24 hour period, unless approved by a physician. Children under 12 should not take this medicine since it exceeds the recommended dose for children and could cause serious health problems.
Uses
If ever there was a catchall pain reliever, Tylenol would have to be it. It is arguably the most well-known name in over-the-counter pain relief. Some of its more common uses are for minor aches and pains such as headaches, muscle aches, backache, minor arthritis pain, common cold symptoms, toothaches, menstrual cramps and fever reduction. Nothing you can buy over-the-counter knocks out my headache like Tylenol.
Storage
Common sense is a wonderful thing; so use it! Keep this and all medication out of reach for children and animals. I have a home daycare and state licensing requires me to keep all medication in a locked cabinet. That is an excellent idea for anyone with small children. You should store this medication at room temperature.
Warnings
Alcohol:You should never mix alcohol and medication, but acetaminophen comes with a special concern. If you drink 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day (or you are otherwise classified as an alcoholic) you need to consult your doctor on whether you should take this medicine. The concern is that acetaminophen can cause liver damage, especially to one that is already taxed.
Use Caution
If you are experiencing symptoms that do not improve, new symptoms that occur after taking Tylenol, pain or fever getting worse or redness and swelling becoming present you will need to stop taking Tylenol immediately and contact your physician.
It is important that you do not use Tylenol with any other product that contains acetaminophen. You should not take Tylenol for longer that 10 days for pain or 3 days for fever without notifying your physician.
A Tip
It seems odd to be thinking of sunbathing when it was 39 degrees outside this morning, but this is really a pretty good tip. We spend most vacations on the beach in Florida, and no matter how vigilant you are with the sunscreen, you can get a sunburn, especially when you frolic in the water to cool off occasionally. If you take two Tylenol caplets, it will ease the sensitive, burning feeling on your skin and decrease the pain.
Cost
For 100 500 mg tablets I paid $5.99 at my local grocery store.
