I was sick. I really think the allergies that Las Vegas triggered, triggered a flu-like cold. I tried my arsenal of cold remedies. I am reviewing Tylenol Sore Throat.

About the product and claims:

This is the Maximum Strength formula and I have the cherry flavor. It also comes in honey lemon. It is an 8-ounce bottle that sells for $6.29.

When I first opened it I had to get through a plastic wrap first. This will rip off fairly easily if you have a fingernail. There seem to be perforations in the plastic but if you have no nails, you might find yourself using a tool to get the plastic off. Once you get by the childproof cap (I am in favor of all these techniques, by the way.) you’ll find a foil seal you’ll probably punch your finger through although you might be able to pull it off. In any case, you finally have the medicine.

It claims to temporarily relieve aches and pains due to sore throat, headache, muscular aches, the common cold, and fever.

We are also told that it is fast acting and should work for 4 hours. We are told it is better than sprays or lozenges.

This is a liquid formula that smells awful. It has a cherry smell, but not a good cherry smell. I think your child over 12 will smell this and gag like I almost did. I will talk about the taste in a moment.

How to take it:

You should only take as much as directed. Adults and children 12 years and over should take 2 tablespoons. You’ll pour the liquid into the dose cup that comes with this medicine and take it every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Absolutely do not use this for children under 12. It will give them more of the recommended dose of Tylenol and truly can produce an overdose.

Warnings:

Please ask your doctor is you can take this if you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks every day. Acetaminophen may cause liver damage. If your sore throat is severe, persists for more than 2 days, is accompanied or followed by fever, headache, rash, nausea or vomiting, consult a doctor promptly. Don’t use this with any other product containing acetaminophen. Stop using Tylenol Sore Throat and talk with your doctor if new symptoms occur; redness or swelling is present; pain gets worse or lasts for more than 10 days; fever gets worse or lasts for more than 3 days. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before using this. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

Store this at room temperature and note that there is a clear expiration date on the bottom of the carton.

Did it work?

I really put a medicine like this in a different category than a spray or lozenges. A lozenge to me is really temporary, at least the ones I usually use. I like sprays to target a sore throat. I was looking at this not only for my throat but also for my elevated temperature, headache and aches.

First I had to get it down! It tastes worse than it is smells. Not only is it strong and medicinal, it is bitter and thick. I really didn’t think I could get the 2 tablespoons down but I did. I would prefer Tylenol Cold Non-Drowsy combined with Cepacol Sore Throat Maximum Relief Cherry.

Tylenol Sore Throat does work on some symptoms. I have taken it for 2 days. It isn’t perfect. I find that it does work fast – certainly within 20 minutes and I feel fewer aches and pains. It has brought my temperature down. My throat is still sore, but not as sore so it hasn’t worked totally, but I am feeling better.

Will I recommend it? In good conscious, no. It is really nasty to swallow and I do realize that cold medicines in the “olden days” tasted even nastier but some have gotten better over the years. Tylenol Sore Throat Maximum Strength hasn’t. Although it does work somewhat, if I can’t get it down or really, really dread it, I would rather take something else.
