What, you've never tried a pumice scouring stick?? If you have stubborn hard water rings or rust in your toilet bowl, you MUST try this! It's the only thing I've found that can remove the horrible rust and water stains our well water tends to leave.
~ Product Description
The US Pumice Heavy Duty Scouring Stick is made of 100% pumice. The amazing abrasive cleaning ability of pumice is well known by professionals, particularly those involved with industrial cleaning and maintenance. It can remove baked on food and grease, acid and water stains, hard mineral deposits, lime or rust, and many other substances from hard surfaces.
From the US Pumice website, they suggest these uses for their Heavy Duty Scouring Stick:
for Removing:
Unsightly toilet bowl rings.
Stubborn stains in tubs, sinks and showers.
Rock-hard mineral deposits around faucets and drains.
Scale and rust on metal work and piping.
Lime and algae deposits in swimming pools.
Rust and grime on workshop and garden tools.
Unwanted paint on tile, masonry and concrete
surfaces.
Baked on food, grease and carbon buildups in ovens,
on barbecues, grills and iron cookware.
When you open the box, you'll find a gray colored stick of pumice. That's it. Mine's worn down some now, so I'm not entirely sure how big it was when new, but figure about 7 inches long or so, and about an inch wide.
The pumice stick is quite light weight, as pumice is rather porous. It almost looks like a stick of cement, but is much lighter in weight.
To use the US Pumice Heavy Duty Scouring Stick, you must first get it wet, as its abrasive action works best in the presence of liquid, such as water, oil, or acid. After you get the stick wet, then simply rub the edge of the stick on the surface you wish to clean, using back and forth strokes. The pumice will sort of form a paste which helps to clean and polish. Then you just need to rinse or wash the surface to clean off the pumice residue. To clean the scouring stick, just rinse in under the water faucet.
Keep in mind that this scouring stick is not for use on soft, highly polished metals, unbaked enamel finishes, glass, fiberglass and other plastics. Some decorator tile and colored porcelain may be damaged by abrasive cleaning, so test a small area before using the scouring stick and on these surfaces.
The US Pumice Heavy Duty Scouring Stick is safe for your hands, and for children, and contains no harsh detergents or chemicals.
~ My Experience
Note that this scouring stick doesn't have any kind of handle. You just hold the pumice stick itself in your hand and start rubbing it on the surface you're cleaning.
I've really only used this on my toilet bowls, so I can't comment on how it works for other applications. Except that it did get up a small rust stain from my tile grout that nothing else I'd tried could remove.
For use in the toilet bowl, I would suggest using some household gloves and get the scouring stick wet in the toilet bowl water, then just start rubbing it on the ring or stains. As you rub, the pumice kind of crumbles a little bit, and makes a kind of irritating scraping sound - but hey! - it is doing its job scraping off the stains. As you continue to rub, you will see that stubborn ring magically disappear. After you've got it cleaned, just flush away the pumice debris.
The pumice stick has an almost square end when new, but as you continue using it the end will become rounder, which actually makes it easier to use. Eventually the stick will wear down to just a stub, and then it's time to get a new one.
You do sometimes have to rub kind of hard, but it's so worth it to be able to get rid of the most stubborn toilet rings.
~ Final Thoughts
If you have a problem with rust or hard water stains in your toilet bowl that ordinary cleaners won't eliminate, run right now to the store and get a US Pumice Heavy Duty Scouring Stick. It's only about $3.99 I think, and I found it in the cleaning section of my local grocery store. It's a miracle! And no harsh chemicals either.
