brentp256's Full Review: US Weekly Magazine Subscription
US Weekly is a weekly gossip magazine. Catering to the curious, the obsessed, and the fashion conscious, it does a superb job at doing what it does. It is not the most in-depth gossip magazine, nor the most journalistic. What is does is provide a half-hour or so of fantasy escapism into the world of gossip, paparazzi, celebrities, fashion, and ego without drowning you there. Pretty pictures, fun gossip, and useful reviews will make you feel more vapid, selfish, yet more ready to enjoy the world. See below for comments on specific sections.
Sections
Red Carpet: Who Wore it Best? compares pictures of two celebrities who are wearing identical, or nearly identical outfits. US Weekly asks 100 people at various public location to vote on who wore the outfit best. The results are printed on top of the celebrities. This is a fun, if guilty, pleasure.
Hot Hollywood has articles on Hollywood-style news. These articles are short 1-2 paragraph stories accompanied by large photographs detailing recent Hollywood news, such as information on a controversial new show, news about a romance or breakup, or even information on a stars fabulous post-baby diet. This section is also littered with various fun polls, and data factoids presented in a fun style.
Loose Talk is a single page of recent quotes from various stars, usually dealing with a recent event or topic. This is always a must-read!
Hot Pics! is a major section of the magazine devoted to large pictures of the stars from everyday situations to gala events. Stars are seen picking up the newspaper in their shorts and curlers (in the aptly titled, Stars Theyre Just Like US! subsection) and at their best at a premier. The pictures are almost always high-quality and interesting! One of the main points to buying this magazine is looking at the pretty pictures, and there are plenty, usually from 10-20 pages worth in this section alone!
The Record is one of the primary reasons for a magazine such as US Weekly. It provides a one page summary of break-ups, marriages, deaths, baby news, legal issues, and more. These are nicely done, single paragraph stories.
Love Lives is a several page section devoted to the most recent gossip around who is in love with who. These are small single paragraph stories dealing with marriage information to couples that are dating.
Hot Stuff is a headline section of the magazine dealing with personal issues of the stars from pregnancy, feuds, and other secondary headlines.
Cover Story is what draws many casual readers to the magazine at the checkout aisle. Several pages long, it goes further in depth into a single story then any other section in the magazine. These stories usually deal with attractive stars (to allow for the sexy cover photo) dealing with their personal lives, such as a major wedding or breakup, or some other larger-scale event. Usually nicely written, this section is a key component of this magazine.
In the News deals with stars that are making actually newsworthy events. These events may deal with a death of a family member, rumors of sexuality and the affects on their career, to a stars comeback from a disease or drug addiction.
US Musts is one of my favorite sections as it give good short reviews of television programs for the upcoming week, new movies, new music, and new DVDs. I tend to agree with their ratings more often then not, so this is one of the first sections that I usually read.
his Minute includes quick facts, short Q&A with the famous, and whats hot at the moment. This is good for a quick feel for the entertainment world.
Star Style shows recent trends in fashion and usually ties them to a famous person. It provides the clothes, accessories, and prices, along with the designer and/or store. Nice touch.
Star Beauty shows what products certain celebs use, it can show how to get them cheaper, how to better use them, and other information that women who wear will find more exciting then I do.
Fashion Police is one of the primary reasons for a magazine like this. Take your famous and wealthy, show pics of them in great or terrible clothing, and have various people take pot-shots at them in the comments. Pure gold!
Sometimes there are other sections dealing with major issues in the entertainment world, such as a major death, and investigation into American Idol, major romance news, etc. These will get their own several pages of good ol journalism and pictures.
All-in-all, for the less than $1.00 per issue subscription rates, this is a fine magazine for pretty pictures, gossip, and other stories to take you out of the daily grind.
