My then 4 1/2 year old son was given the U.S. Map Woodboard Puzzle, by a friend of the family's, when he was first undergoing chemotherapy treatment for Childhood Leukemia. He was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks initially, and we were running out of ways to keep him occupied.
This gift turned out to be one of the best gifts he was given at that time. My son has always enjoyed putting together different types of puzzles and this one was the perfect one for him to spend time on , as he would be entering Kindergarten in just a few short weeks.
This puzzle is made out of a very colorful, durable, thick card board type material. The puzzle itself is of the entire United States, including Hawaii & Alaska. Each piece fits securely into it's respective place and is very easy to take out and put back in. Included on each State piece is the name of the State Capital.
After my son was able to master putting the puzzle pieces in the correct place, he began to show a real interest in the names of the States and the State Capitals. I was extremely surprised one day when I realized he actually had remember several of the different State names and Capitals!
By the end of Kindergarten my son knew the names of all the States and their capitals!!
This Puzzle was brought along on each and every inpatient hospital stay that my son had, and was played with more than any other puzzle that he brought along with him. My son spent many, many hours putting the puzzle together, taking it apart, and putting it back together, which kept him distracted from the various medical tests & procedure that were being performed on him.
I highly recommend the U.S. Map Woodboard Puzzle to any child over the age of 4. This would be a fantastic gift to give a child for a birthday or other special holiday. Most of the toys that my children have since outgrown, have been given to friends & neighbors, however we will probably always hang on to this one.
