Puzzles are always fun for kids to play with. While I have nothing against the good old picture puzzles, I always prefer to get a toy that can be used for learning. This one is a good investment, and is a toy that you can use even with your younger children that have not yet begun to read.
With the children we have known, this puzzle can be a great teaching tool that can literally be used for several years. You can start with a young child that is just beginning to understand larger puzzles. They will enjoy working with you to get all the states in place. This is a good time to use this puzzle not only in showing them the various shapes, but also to teach and review colors. There are many colors in this puzzle, and you will find that the repetition that comes in the 50 states helps the youngster in learning their colors.
You can also use this puzzle for children that are beginning to learn to read. They will enjoy reading the different state names on the pieces. Once they are able to read, then this becomes a great geography tool. You can teach them where the states are, the four directions on the compass, and help them learn the names of all 50 states. When they become a little more advanced, you can also start to learn the capitals of the states as well.
This is a sturdy puzzle, made for years of use. I think you will be pleased with the way this puzzle holds up over time, and how your child will continue to enjoy it for several years.
