My son received this puzzle as a gift when he turned four. He immediately became obsessive-compulsive about learning all the states. It was not just about learning where the pieces fit, but the name of the state, and how long it would take us to get there if we drove.
This puzzle is just like it is described. It is pressed wood, with wooden pieces. There is a paper overlay, which gives the design of the states...in other words; each state is not painted. Unfortunately, the paper comes off easily, and some of the weaker states like Florida tend to break. Under each of the puzzle pieces is the outline of the state with star placed where the capital is, with the capital name next to it. They also have a picture of something that the state is famous for, or is known to produce. I.e. Florida has picture of oranges. California has the Golden Gate Bridge. Idaho has potatoes...you get my point?
Even though this puzzle is a great learning tool...I mean how else would a 4 year old learn all 50 states...I was a little disappointed that all the states were not separate. Some of the states are hooked together...like Alabama and Georgia are one piece of the puzzle, rather than having a separate piece for Georgia, and another one for Alabama. They also don't even have a puzzle piece for Alaska and Hawaii. They are just drawn in on the outer area of the map. For that matter, Alaska isn't even in the right spot. It is down under California, where as it should be up over Washington State.
All that being said, I am thrilled my son is such geography buff, and can name all 50 states at age 5. I have even caught him eating a cookie and yelling "hey mom...look...South Carolina!" Meaning, he ate the cookie into the shape of one of the states. Cute huh? I just think Playskool could have done a little better job with the quality and content of this puzzle.
